According to various..sources, there are cycles that last anywhere from 90 to 110 minutes, and the time right after REM sleep is a period where you are only lightly sleeping. I assume this is the time when waking up would be most beneficial. Of course sleep is still vastly misunderstood, but this is what I gather from various google terms.
The 90 minute cycle is somewhat crucial to lucid dreaming. A certain method of inducing lucid dreams involves waking up directly after a REM period has ended which is noted to be at 4.5 hours into sleep or 6 hours (note the 90 minute factor), and then going to bed shortly after that. Of course that's not to say the cycle isn't different for everyone, which is why strictly 90 minutes is indeed 'wrong'. There's also the point that REM starts off in much shorter periods of time in earlier sleep cycles..and so on. It's a very interesting topic nonetheless..
