A bus driver who deliberately knocked a cyclist down in Bristol using his bus "as a weapon" has been jailed. Gavin Hill, 29, of Frome, previously pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm. Bristol Crown Court heard that after an altercation, Hill deliberately knocked Phillip Mead off his bike by swerving the bus into his path

I guess it Europe and downtown areas it can be different, but nothing makes me rage harder than Farking cyclists.

If cars are travelling 60 km/h, if you can't keep up with that pace, get on the Farking sidewalk or on the shoulder.

You all know you've wanted to do this to someone before.

Meh.. Nobody deserves that !

Seriously, no matter how annoyed you might be at another road user... You can't Just crash into a person a cyclist, a car or anything else for that matter.. who annoy you. That's unacceptable under any circumstances.

A little sarcasm but I did, sort of, meant what I said. No, there is no excuse for using a vehicle (especially a bus lol) as a weapon against someone in a minor argument. However, it's not as if the cyclist gave the bus driver too much of an option; what else was there to do? Keep honking and hope the idiot moves out of his way? Step outside and try to chase down a guy in a bike? None of them have any favorable outcomes. Take a note from Sun-Tzu, always leave some option of escape for your enemies, unless you want to see what people can do under desperate situations. Not to say the bus driver had nothing to lose but when you're seeing red, it's not easy to be completely rational. Imagine yourself in the bus driver's shoes.

I'm not saying the bus driver's actions were justified. I'm just giving you a better insight about his side of the story since everyone's so caught up with the poor cyclist victim. I have very little sympathy for douche-bags who go out of their way to be a complete jackass to other people and then start crying after encountering the consequences.

Would you say the same thing if the person was a child ?

Btw: The bus driver shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel of a bus ever again!

Same could be said if the driver was your brother. Emotional bias does not erase the fact that, in part, the cyclist's poor judgement led to this.

I agree the cyclist was at fault for deliberately taking over half of the road. But.. the bus was being used as a weapon, a man was very badly injured and could have been killed. Seriously.. there's no excuse, none whatsoever for the bus driver to do that to him.

Let me add emphasis to this word here. A bike rider is not your enemy. Your fellow road users are not your enemy. I don't know what the laws are in your country, but here a bike has the exact same road rights as a car or a bus. They have the right to ride on the road, that's the law. You don't treat them as an enemy, you just be patient and wait a whole 20 seconds till you can over take. Just for a fun fact it's illegal to ride on a footpath here, so it gets rid of that option.

The bus drivers actions were too harsh considering the factors of the scenario. The bike rider was just trying to get to work or whatever and the bus driver, intentionally, decided to kill him because he was sick of waiting. Extremely overboard.

If other people's poor judgement causes you to act like an animal and get yourself landed in jail then you deserve a time out...In fact you obviously needed a time out before it happen to deal with whatever issues/stresses your facing.... It's people like this bus driver who comes to school or work and start shooting up the place...

@Twil: I never said that they're enemies just because they ride different vehicles. They had an argument before he decided to tap him with a bus. Therefore there was conflict between the two, which makes them enemies.

@Fox: I never said it's excusable for him to do it. He deserves the sentence he got in jail but I wouldn't be so quick to label the cyclist as an innocent victim and the driver as a ruthless criminal. If he simply rode away instead of propping his bicycle in front of an on-duty bus and arguing with the driver for whatever reason, and then commencing on riding slowly in front of the vehicle after the confrontation, then none of this would've occurred. In short, his jackass self-righteous attitude, which enraged the already-agitated driver, got him to the hospital.

Both parties were guilty and they both got what they deserve.

you fail in so many ways with this line. I wanted to explain it to you, but I don't feel like stating the obvious.

No need to explain it, my friend, I can see it perfectly from your standpoint. I truly wish the world was that simple, but alas, it is not. You sympathize with the cyclist because he's the one that ended up with the physical injuries, which, in your head, absolves him of any guilt and erases whatever negative actions he committed that led to this rather unfortunate conclusion. You, however, fail to view it from the other party's point-of-view. It was not, of course, a decision he made in his brightest moment but nonetheless, he was provoked by Mr. Mead. Of course, it is very easy and convenient, in this case, to play the role of an innocent victim when you're in a hospital bed, regardless of your previous actions. After all, such a position does lure people to lend you their sympathy and support without delving deeper into the case.

Inky by saying both got what they deserve you'e saying that it's OK for people, who through non physical means incite a conflict, should get punished psychically and perhaps in a violent manner. You're not looking at the fact that the driver shouldav exercised restraint (not easy but appropriate). I cant agree with you. Not even the law will agree with you and that's why a heavier (if not the only) sentence will be bestowed on the bus driver.

Most conflicts arise out of provocation. Neither party exercised sound judgement, therefore resulting in one being sent to a hospital, and the other in jail. It's an even trade-off.
