Katana for display
Yes, that's right. I'm planning to buy a decent samurai sword for display. Nothing too expensive, just something nice and presentable for a decent price $100-$150. If I pass my board exam next week, I'm definitely ordering one of these babies. So far my top choice is:

Any good recommendations on swords or websites if any of you guys purchased one before?
EDIT:
Found a website with pretty good reviews and a decent reputation:

Re: Katana for display
I've got a pretty nice katana at home, quite similar to the one you picked, i forgot exactly where i got it though T__T.
It's a shame people generally find any money put into a katana a waste while buying a nice print / painting for on your wall is fine.
Either way, if i were you i'd buy a stand with it. Unless you have a great place to keep it on your wall or something.
This is the one i have (rather LQ picture, so hamon isn't to visible).

Is not a simple "sword", It's a Katana!

It goes well with my idea of design and since NYC makes it so hard to own a handgun for self-defense, I'd rather go with a samurai sword over an ugly, shitty baseball bat. It's beautiful, elegant, and dangerous.
@Devil:
Yeah, I'm getting a separate stand for it. Tabletop stands are nice but I'm probably gonna stick with a wall mount.

Yeah, they're well awesome.
Though I still don't trust a website named simply JapaneseSwords.com trying to sell Japanese Swords as real Japan made,, authentic Katanas.

I always do some digging before I purchase something online. The site is kind of just a retailer so I can always find the same design elsewhere.

Re: Katana for display
Try this site....This is were my iaido instructor recommend I got my iaito. As you can see these swords aren't cheap. They're actually made fairly well.
http://www.hanweishop.com/products.php?cat=460
I wouldn't recommend you using one of these to defend yourself. You could get into some serious trouble if you actually use it on someone. If you feel you really want one to defend yourself with a katana at least obtain one that was not sharpened. You could use it to scare off your attackers.

One of my room mates has a katana that lives in in the living room. It has an ivory handle and sheath, it looks insanely nice. I'll see if I can get the DSi working and take a picture of it.

Re: Katana for display
I've been looking through Musashi sword's official site. Since the prices are actually pretty decent, I'm thinking of getting 2. Hanwei swords are amazingly sleek but a bit too expensive for me.
Then have a 2-sword wall mount.
@Budo:
Yep. I wouldn't use it to kill unless I have no other option. Despite the fact that I firmly believe that I should be able to kill any uninvited fuck who breaks into my house, society thinks criminals have human rights too. I'll probably slice off some skin though lol - not like I don't know how to avoid the major arteries and highly vascular organs.
@Twil:
Thanks

Re: Katana for display
They're probably just gonna sit on the stand unless I actually take some Kendo lessons and buy a cutting stand. Aside from routine cleaning of course.

Re: Katana for display
I bought one when I went through that phase back in high school... Sits under my bed in my old house now. Full tang and everything so it was ok to use, it came dull and instructions on how to sharpen it, but like someone else said, it's probably better to leave it dull than to sharpen it up. Using a katana to defend yourself can be even worse. You have to know what constitutes a defensive strike and when to stop before going to far. This will probably mean letting the crook run away, not hack and slash like mad. The katana i bought wasn't very well made though. It's not balanced very well and takes quite a lot of effort to control it in a swing. All in all, it's just a glorified, metal baseball bat.
I can't see a true katana being sold for under $300. I mean true katana in the sense of fully balanced, easy to maneuver, full tang, sharpened, hardened steel, etc. Most of the ones you see for under $100 can be full tang, but the steel isn't as good and isn't very balanced. Meant for decoration, not for combat use.
Back when I took martial arts, I remember asking the black belts. Their katanas ranged from $250-1000.

Re: Katana for display
Lol went through that phase back in high school huh. Congrats on growing out of it I guess...
I did mention it's going to be mainly used as a decor. I highly doubt I'll ever use it but it's good to always have something in my place if I ever need it. I don't think I need to tell you that reply to Budo is a joke - so no worries if you think I'm out to hack people just because I have a sword; I am aware that recklessness will bring more trouble than it actually solves.
I don't think I would ever spend more than $200 on a sword unless I actually practice kendo as a hobby. Not like there's enough space in a NYC apartment to start practicing with a sword. Thanks for your concern though.

I prefer them. Trueswords has been rumored to lie about their products. Their "Battle Ready" are not always full tang which totally nullifies that point. Not a big deal really if you want it for display, but you'll be paying more for something that should cost 1/2 as much.

I'll try to get them from Musashi's main website if I can but right now, one of the models that I want to purchase is out-of-stock.

I've seen a couple videos like that lol. "Practice" Katanas.. I bet it was stainless steel with a thread tang lol. ($20-$40). If you want something good, make sure to get something that comes with a letter of authenticity and isn't made from stainless steel. If it's under $100, it probably sucks. If it rattles when you shake it or the blade feels like it's moving, it's strictly for show so don't hit anything with it.
You Want
Carbon or Damascus Steel.
Full Tang.
Should come with a letter of authenticity.
