NFS Shift 2 for the most mainstream "simulator" out there. Not that it's a bad simulator, but it has some arcade elements to it's feel.
For more serious simulators that definately require a proper wheel setup, yet don't look as good NFS:S2 try either Live for Speed (LFS) or rFactor.
For more of an arcade feel + guarenteed win, even on the hardest setting then take Dirt 3. It's plenty of fun and is something a little different to most driving games.
If you love free roam, Dont bother to try NFS Shift, try other series. The newest NFS World is F2P online racing but kinda boring if you are not willing to pay for those premium cars.

The best NFS i encountered was "Need for speed : Most Wanted" , I don't like the others or find them worth my time .
So in the first week in college i went with jeans and the pajama's shirt. Didn't notice what i was wearing till after i returned home.
Idk if this will help but all the Burnout games had hours upon hours of gameplay and it was a lot of fun. I'm not sure if it's on PC but it was on the xbox360. You can't play online anymore and race anymore but burnout paradise had literally over 40 hours of gameplay. I still haven't completed \it xD
