Setup my own private server?

First off, I tried searching, not just this forum but the entire Internet, for an hour now and all I got was incomplete or outdated information and details.

So, if you could answer the questions we have, that would be great!

- What is needed to obtain in order to be able to run a server for this game[e.g.server files]?
- How much would it approximately cost?
- Is the original game maker eligible to sue us in court for such an act?
- What kind of internet and a computer station is able to run this thing?



Since my 'team' is consisted of people only with $$ skills, I suppose we would have to hire coders/developers to sort the files, keep them updated and setup in-game settings?

Any additional details will be helpful,

I've been thinking of this aswell.

Basiclly you need to get your hands on the real server files, that's not gonna be easy. And then you need some software, a computer to run the server and a stable internet connection. The more people playing the better computer you need etc

And the money problem well, I've got a small 'mmorpg community' in my town and there are 20 people willing to contribute.

how much would you sell a game's files for that makes you thousands of dollars daily?

thousands of dollars daily? hmm I wouldn't sell those for sure., but If I were I'd probably go with a price of $50,000 or something similar,BUT since the files are stolen I doubt that would be even close to the price range.

To support 2000 players u need to rent a server that would cost about 5k+ a month in order to have no lags. Also you would need to hire server and or network administraitors to configure and optimize the server for the files. People who do this professionally make 55k+ a year and u may need to contract them to get ur server up and running considering most hosts just lease the system and it is your job to set it up. Not to mention how much the owners of the leaked files will charge for the files. Also I am sure the owners would only lease and not sell u the files. My suggestion if you have this kind of money is to try and get in contact with the owners of the current private servers and talk with then or contact joymax about leasing options. But as you should know thus venture will not be easy or cheap.

Finally, an worthy answer, thanks ElZilcho for you time. Well I'd have guessed this kind of a deal is in the order of business. About the private server owners, I already contacted them and I'm waiting for the reply. Contacted Joymax some time ago and tried to get an answer via phone call but.., lets just say I didn't have any luck with that.

My (our) main goal is to get all the information needed, so we know whats to expect, before we get in this kind of arrangements.

Not really, a 50€ a month server would suffice.

Yes, servers comparable to joymax will cost you around 5k a month. But that's not the point, an optimized emulator can run fine on a cheap x3440 which will cost you around 50-100€ a month. Bandwith is not really an issue and I didn't take DDoS mitigation in account. However I would strongly advise against even trying to run your own private server if you don't know how to code, nor how to manage a server nor have experience in private servers or community management.

Meaning I am now aware that the maintenance will cost monthly, not just the server but the staff. And that's ok, we are prepared for this.

The main reason for the price difference of ElZ and Atibu is that ElZ were talking about a DDOS protection as well. That can cost a lot! Really, a lot! And it's most likely going to be a set amount of money every single month.

First of all, you're not going to get the files from Joymax. Not unless you're a company at least. They're not just going to hand over the files to some random person (you are random to them).

So yeah, you said you've contacted one of the already existing private server owners. You know what, I think I'm just gonna send you a pm instead.
