Specialty Goods Box's what are they used for when dropped from mob?

SGB are used to gain blue (hunter) or black (thief) stones which are used to make Shining stones that are used in crafting job items .

You collect them then you will find them at your "trader's pouch" , anyway just go to the trader Npc or Smuggler Npc and choose consigment trade and they will be invested .

Once the consigment trade ends you will get a number of stones equal to the number of SGB you invested and a ticket that is used to gain job items
( you may want to defend your job's one and attack the opposite job's trade run to gain an enormous number of speciality goods boxes ) .

Would you say it is worth collection SGB ?

Blue/Black stones can be sold easily 100k each (they are sold in stacks of 50 mostly) , so if this is worth much to you then go for it but Always put at least 1 SGB at consigment trades to gain a ticket that can be traded for job items .

How long do these consignment trade's stay open for?

3-5 hours i guess , give or take .

It has a limit of speciality goods boxes per server , so once that limit is reached , the consigment trade begins .
