And yes they can store information, though only through a service. They can store your images (if you want), contacts (if you want), the list can go on, but ONLY IF YOU WANT. The Sidekick was a good example of this, and they got screwed over(look it up.[Though the sidekick was required to store the information]) And yes I know text message date/time and phone call date/time can be recorded but the contents of either aren't recorded.
The only information regarding the iPhone that is being discussed is a cache of location-based data points, not images, not contact information, and not personal preferences, so I don't understand why you chose to put emphasis on that clarification when it's immaterial to the discussion. Besides, I already mentioned everything you said and cited my information (and you didn't, again) so it's doubly irrelevant.

Consolidated.db is a cache of cell tower points used for a function in iOS called Core Location. Core Location is essentially a type of offline GPS that uses cell towers to provide location information, though admittedly not very accurately since signal isn't consistent. However, to fix the issue, Core Location will store cell tower IDs and match them whenever you're near them to provide a faster response and remove the delay altogether. The issue here is still encryption, but it's not the bogus Skynet boogeyman that linkbaiting news sites or disgruntled fanboys are portraying. This is actually not a new thing and it was explained in video tutorials during the 2010 WWDC. Various developers have already confirmed this and agree that this is for the most part unimportant, though a clear oversight in protecting or regularly clearing the file for security purposes.

Why does it matter? Its not going to get widespread enough, because if enough people find out they will boycott, and I am sure the phone companies don't care that much about location tracking. Also mind filling me in on what they will do with the locations? They won't release it in fear of a lawsuit.
Iphone has the best app market, more then enough of a reason for me to get it, the only thing that HTC that I wish Iphone had is 4g, but that will be fixed soon.
