Can someone explain US government to me?

So I'm not white. I live in the States. How is it that Congressmen can't do their job, have months of extensions to make a budget, BUT they will still get paid even if there is a government shutdown. Meanwhile soldiers who are ACTUALLY doing their job won't be paid. This includes many other important government workers such as the local weathermen who will have to keep working to ensure the skies are safe for flying etc. won't be paid as well.

If I had a Farking job, did not produce any work for months on end, I would not be getting a continuous paycheck. Hell I'm pretty sure most places would fire me.

Another thing, why is it that the President has a limit of 2 terms of 4 years each, but the Senate has 6 year terms while House of Representatives have 2 year terms. Unlike the Presidency, Senators and members of the house can stay in office for an indefinite time. There are people in there that are likely senile and aren't even aware of the current social situation in the country. They really need to be fired >_>.

President Obama is said to be the one who ruins the country. (many people believe this) and This government shutdown thing, if it happens we still have a day to see, China can buy us, and we wont be a democracy anymore. But, Benjamin Franklin said America should have a revolution ever so long to keep the government in check. If it shuts down, we will most likely have a revolution.

Politics is a complicated subject.

As quoted from the guardian. "One of the most emotional issues is that troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere would not receive pay cheques until the crisis is resolved. But they would at least continue earning during any shutdown, unlike civilian employees." This means soldiers will still be getting paid.

On a side note, the reason why there may even be a government shutdown is due to the tug of war over the Budget. Republicans want to cut 1 trillion dollars out of the Budget, whilst the Democrats(Obama) don't. If they can't come to an agreement over the 2011 budget, than the government goes into a shutdown.

Congressmen DO their jobs, its just that its a really complicated job. They can't please everybody.

The president has a limit of 2 terms because of FDR. Until his time, the president could serve an infinite amount of times, but after he served 4 terms, it was felt that they should put a limit on it to bring in new ideas. As to why everyone else can run for re-election and win multiple times, it is because they are incumbents. They most likely already have power, thus its easier to retain it.

This government is a lot more stable than others, don't take it for granted. Be glad you aren't somewhere else where there isn't a government at all.

In my opinion the government will not shut down. One or the other will have to give in, or they will come up with some sort of compromise within the next 24 hours.

edit: Don't take anything I say as fact, do a bit of research before hand. I'm only a junior in AP Government. Coincidentally, we discussed this exact issue in class today.

I never took government classes in high school actually... Guess that's why I don't know much. We had AP american history, but I slept through EVERY single day, aced the exam, bombed the government portion, and passed with a 4/5 on the AP exam.

Haven't had to touch anything politic/government related in school ever since.

If we print more money, the value of the dollar decreases, we have to have something to back up all we print. Back in the civil war and WW1 we had the Gold Standard. But not its really just based on a concept by the federal reserve and the government.

I was in the International Baccalaureate program. It was more focused on college level classes. It's the reason I started College with Senior status. Could've graduated in 1.5-2years if I wanted to not mess around. I went to private middle school and they weren't very focused on government either. Closest we had was a 1 semester course on basic government structure.

Ill tell you what I believe is going on in the long run. Even if it sounds crazy. The problems with the economy and our governments are all orchestrated. It is all political/social/economical engineering. Whether one believes in religious stuff or secret societies or just evolution, the next step in human development is to move to a global government to harness the power of man as a whole rather than many factions against each other. The worse things are economically and politically. The easier it will be to dismiss our current government systems to move to a better system. This isnt just going on in politics its happening in sports too. By way overpaying football (and other sports) players, and allowing them to get greedier and greedier (note the current potential lock on nfl), and use our tax dollars to fund their sports domes and not even pay into it at all themselves. it will make it easier to shut down said sports and incorporate a global game to unite us. That of course will be soccer. Im not saying this is leading to a one world, dictator, evil, alien being or something. Im just saying its all leading us into the next stage of human development. If it does (and it probably will) get used for greedy and malicious purposed down the road, like every other government and religious institution has in the past, is yet to be determined.

How it works: Suck a lot of dick (like these congressmen did), then get paid to sit around. It's how the money system works. Just look at the banks; while people lose homes to interest rates and foreclosure, their CEOSs get bailed out and earn record-high bonuses for basically causing the problems.
