Wirless vs. wired

Post by marijnz0r »

Hey all!

I'm currently using a wireless connection for gaming, but I'm going to the attic with my PS3. The connection is good now, but I don't know if it's going to change.
Common sense would lead me to believe that being wired would be an obvious connection improvement, but I've seen other people saying it doesn't make a difference, is this true? Even in my case for the signal going through 2 floors?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Davolink DV-2020.
Looks cheap to me :(
Tried to make a connection from the modem/router to my PS3, but it didn't go very well.

I have a router at the bottom floor, and one in the attic, just cuz im cool like that yo. Even with two routers, I have my PC connected to the router, with a wire lol. We made an ethernet cable run up to the attic inside the walls of our house. Thats the best option. Obviously your not going to destroy walls, but the vents could be an option.

One is a booster, one is the normal, and btw, I have it set up so even if you do have the key, I need to allow your MAC address on my network. Goodluck with that :) kthnxbai

It might not make a difference speedwise, not much atleast. But in terms of staying connected wired will always be better. I made my dad drill a hole in the wall so I could get wired because my wireless kept dropping all the time. Fck wireless.

yeh you might but in terms of the average person i doubt it, iv done something similar plus when i found someone leeching my net i blocked that connection outright so even if they do get past my security they aint getting online lol

Wong, its also easy to figure out what the person's IP and what he is downloading from your router, if he can get on. So if some horny guy decided to rape my internet by dl porno, I could take screen shots, print them and blackmail him to show his wife, and that could = ??? = profit

Thought remote access was disabled as default. At least it has been for me. Always had to enable it.

+1

Losing connection with wireless is indeed the big issue

Though if it is enabled and they didn't password protect the secret Administrator account. Pure joy could be had.

Do want to note that wired uses csma/cd and wireless uses csma/ca. cd is collision detection and ca is collision avoidance. Short version ca causes latency.

Also wireless is Half-Duplex meaning it can only transmit or receive at a time not both.

Playing for one week at the attic now.
Still the same connection, so the difference between 1m away from the router and 2 stories up doesn't matter.
At least not noticeable.
Thanks all!
