Boost router signal

Anyone know an uncomplicated way to do it? I recently got moved into the attic of the house i live in and at first things weren't a problem. The modem that is used here is having some problems and probably needs to be replaced but today i saw a Comcast truck outside my window so i'm pretty sure they were messing with things and also some new people moved in next door and i'm sure they've set up their own gadgets and gizmos AND i have a new roommate who is also is bringing a ton of new junk to the party which i'm sure is only going to complicate things.

The only thing i have tested is that when i move my laptop to the attic i basically lose all signal from my router and get D/C'd but because all three of those things happened at once i have no idea what i should be trying to fix. You'd think it would be the router signal that's the problem but like i said this only started happening once all three of those things went down and not the previous nights so i'm not even sure if boosting the signal would help. But whatever ideas anyone has i'm open to listening.

the router model is a Linksys WRT54G v.8 if that helps.

Try changing the channel the router broadcasts on. Go by 3 channels at a time so say if it's at channel 3 go to channel 6. Or just try changing it to channel 11.

Check the settings on your router . You might find that you can increase the transmit power. When I had a wireless router I was able to turn up (or down) my transmit power as part of the configuration feature. Not sure where you'd find it in your router. Maybe under "wireless settings"

Also try to position the antenna on your router for the proper polarization. If the antenna is positioned vertically the signal propagation is outward and toward the walls of where it is sitting with not nearly as much signal strength reaching the attic. Try laying the antenna horizontally since you are in the attic.

If the signal strength isn't the issue like your saying then move the router to a different location because it might be in a spot where reflecting signals from the other devices are canceling your signal out creating a null zone in the attic

Well if you insist. First off, You're going about this completely wrong. If all three of these things happened at the same time you must eliminate the variables. Start by doing things to your new neighbors to make them leave... Once you've got them to move out, if the problem persist, you have to now destroy all your new roommates stuff, so you know that's not the issue. Alright the problems still happening? Hmmm You should probably see if you're getting a good signal through 12 inches of wood, insulation, wires, and carpet that is your attic floor. If this is the problem you should check here http://www.wikihow.com/Boost-a-Router-Signal... But don't do this until you've taken care of the first problems.

Oh yeah.. You're not using a vista desktop wireless-ly are you?

Agree 100%... but don't make the mistake I made... 150 ft Orange cord................ The max I've ever had to use is about 40 feet... 100+ feet of orange cable is hard to hide around my desk area and don't wanna waste money on the kits to splice it into many cords. Also go with white or black cord, so its easy to hide. (not saying you're going to go this route, but for people that do, just a little advice)

Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter.

That is the name of the beast i must now slay. I had been banging my head against this thing for awhile, even coming here. Thanks for the tips btw. I saw that little douchetool earlier but i thought compared to all the other things it could possibly be it was on the low priority list. Turns out the damn thing broadcast on multiple 2.4GHz channels which makes finding the right channel to broadcast the router on extremely difficult not to mention that i already adjusted the routers channel earlier this year to get rid of a ridiculous issue with the phone (everytime the phone rang or someone was on it i would get D/C'd). When i get some alone time i'll test out some other channels, see if there's an alternative for my roommate, or try moving the router/PC/adapter around and see if that changes anything. Odds are i'll be running the hardline to the attic though.

Nice tips with antenna positioning, learn something new erreday. But really thanks for all the replies again, it's nice being able to come to a place and get a response like this.

If your area is congested with the 2.4GHz band try wireless N. It broadcasts at 2.4/5 might solve your issue. If your router supports it try 802.11a it uses the same 5GHz band as N but is an older Protocol so not as fast/long range.

No problem....I didn't think an XBox 360 would be the cause of the problem. I figured since they're made to be in the home with other wireless devices they wouldav been designed to not cause interference. Maybe it could be configured to not broadcast on multiple 2.4GHz channels?

i dont think wireless N is that much faster.. it says it should be but i think the range is actually reduced but stronger in that reduced area..
as for speed i notice no difference what so ever.

If you don't decide not to use the ethernet, I have a good way to boost your wifi. Take alum. Foil and shape it to a dome around your device in the possible way. Usually better to do to both if possible and point them to each other. It redirects a lot of energy being wasted back to you.
