Engine Nightmare

I dont know why i feel the need to share this, prolly more to just vent my rage but il do it in a milk manor you guys will never know im getting annoyed with this.

I have a beetle and it needs fixxing up, im no mechanic infact before this i never touched an engine in my life but here i am doing it. i quite easily managed to drop it out of the car and move it out i know all the major parts, what i can take off and what i shouldnt but the one thing that has no real important value thats on the engine i cant remove is the tinware...1 screw has broke few came out after a good soaking in penatrating fluid but there is 4 im unable to take out this leaving me with an impossible situation i cant clean or fix up the engine with these on.

So anyone know how to remove stubborn possibly rusted on flat head screws? iv tried penatrating fluid and using a hammar to hit the top of them, we managed to remove a couple by attaching a ajustable spanner to the screw driver to use as some leverage but stil 4 remain please any ideas will help

Will the screws/part need to be put back on at a later time or is this a permanent removal? If you are desperate (and it is a permanent removal) you could use a drill and drill bit to drill out the head. AKA drill through the head until it falls off. The shank will remain screwed in though, but the part will be released.

They also sell bits that will grab the head and attempt to pull it out.. they basically drill into the head with the drill in reverse and once it grabs the screw should start spinning/coming out.

I've only ever used the first method and then when we replaced what was removed we taped new holes.

may i add its a classic beetle, not the new girly one, the tinware which i cant remove is fairly cheap to replace and i could salvage from any old engine beetle engine i will try drill it out problem is one is in a very tight space drilling it out will be a problem the other 3 are easy to drill out, besides im not gona put screws back on il prolly bolt them on so next time i dont have this problem

By your description I have no idea what you are talking about. Take a picture of the problem and then post it, then maybe I can offer some help.

Okay so you're talking about the tin ware on the classic beetles that keeps the cool air on the motor eh? I haven't worked on many classic beetles.. Are the screws going into the cast iron? If so, hitting them with a hammer might not be such a good idea. You're best bet is to use a drill like EvGa said.

the screws just go into other tinware not really only the main part of the motor

As for what im doing with it, im cleaning it up, gasket change, checking the piston heads/push pins, valve check and ajust only thing im not doing is cracking open the crank case if i do go that far il need someone to help as im not really a mechanic so just sticking with the easier stuff that i can do, dont want to have to rebore/drill or replace any major interal engine parts

Well let me know 3-6 months down the road if it cranks back up =P I know, when I pull a motor out of a project car, it usually sits there in pieces in my garage for months =/ Remember to keep it out of the humidity though... and w/e you do... don't try to use sandpaper on the pistons lol

haha i wont its a machined surface you dont mess with it, if they look damaged il replace i wont try fix myself

it will be back up in the car in a month or so just need to get some paint for the tinware, thermal paint for the block then whack it back in (after iv changed the gaskets and such ofc)

How many miles are on the engine? If you are replacing the head gasket I'd take a look at the rods and bearings to see if they need to be replaced as well

Also how did you test for the blown gasket? Did you do a leak down test and a compression check?

i didnt test for it, im chaning my gaskets so it dont happen as this is a project build and iv got the engine out anyways for body work and chassis work

but il check what i can without cracking the crank case so for arguements sake thats pretty much everything

i need to learn how to check for compression thats something i dont know how to do but its meant to be quite simple
