Re: Dead laptop?
If it can POST try booting a USB linux, assuming you didn't have other USB devices plugged in already. However if it can not POST then it probably is a bios issue. Could try resetting it by removing the button battery inside the laptop, if it has one that is, and see if that fixes it. Further into that issue you could try replacing that battery.
Possibilities,
USB interference
HDD failure
Corrupt OS
BIOS failure
BIOS battery failure
BIOS needs reset

Re: Dead laptop?
Deadass this happened to me today.
Goood thing i know a little about computers.
When you start your computer up and you see your manufacturer logo rapidly press F8 and it should take you to an advanced boot menu from there try to restore your system to a previous point in time where it worked. I did that with my desktop today and it worked fine. I had my friend over TeamViewer help me clean up my computer with all the errors and stuff so it should be good now.
And i called the company (Compaq) and they said my warranty was out of date so they charge ($49.99) for a 1 time problem and 14 days if its the same problem but if its a different problem its another ($49.99). they also offered a one year phone support for ($99.99). i just told him no thanks and hung up

Re: Dead laptop?
Notebooks die a lot. It's simply due to the fact that all the components are smashed together and there is rarely a notebook that is able to efficiently move the air and cool down all the components. After a few years, things just melt or break.
If you can access the bios then good. What happens exactly when you startup. Does it reach the bios page, the computer's brand page, windows, etc. Need to know exactly how far it gets booting up to be able to help. If it can't even make it to the bios or brand page, You're gonna have to take it apart to figure out where the connection is broken or just go buy a new one.
