Or they could just be good and actually have bought them with the gold they earned.
Really, it's not that hard.... I've never had a problem with earning my gold (and no I don't ever merchant) or buying sos items (< L32) .

On my first char, in the 2Xs i had 2 sos equiped. Just stalled everything i got as drops.

well dont worry i break 1 mil bout lvl 24 then i bought my wolf and start earning again.Now im lvl 34 and i have like 2 mil but i spend looot of gold with my wolf(grass-over 30 times and pots)
My first and only sos is a jadeite ring with str3 and freezing which droped
around lvl 32
I can't afford a sox wep

when my friend made a new char, i gave him 5mil to start off.
he bought/resold and had 60mil by time he was L30.
ever since, he's never had less than 40mil
