New Comp
Been 5 years since I last upgraded and I'm tired of playing starcraft with the graphics set to low. No PCI Express x16 2.0 slots so I can't just upgrade the gfx card. My idea for what I want is this:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T (link)
GFX: EVGA GTS 450 1GB (link)
MB: MSI 870-G45 AM3 AMD 770 (link)
RAM: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) (link)
HDD: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 3.0 GB/s 16MB Cache (link)
Total Cost: $475.96 (445 after rebate)
Any recommendations that differ from my setup? Only thing I won't get is an ATI card.

Already got a case with good airflow so I'm not going to replace it. Have a decent PSU too but I'm open to suggestions.
Edit: This found a deal with the card I was thinking of getting, comes with a Cooler Master Silent Pro M 600W - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... CatId=3669
Re: New Comp
HDD kind of small but I guess that's just my standards. You can probably find a cheaper 320GB HDD though. I'd also upgrade that graphics card to a 460, as the bang for buck is quite a bit better..but you do have a rebate making that $95.
Could always wait till boxing day for a graphics card as the prices will be insane.

Re: New Comp
I'd always get a cheapass psu with a huge unnecessary wattage amount, my current pc has a 600W psu that cost me about 30$, pc only requres 400W to run. Brand name or cheapass, they'll all burn one day.

Re: New Comp
A 5 year old computer probably doesn't have the case size nor psu for that stuff...

Re: New Comp
Case sizes go by form factors and they haven't changed in a very long time. Though power supplies have differed a bit..

Re: New Comp
ur definitely gonna need a new PSU.. atleast 500w minimum. most new GPU's require 450w minimum. no cpu fan? no dvd drive?
Seems a little overpriced as well i'd suggest buying a barebones kit instead of buying the pieces separate. would be much cheaper.

Re: New Comp
@azilius Yes, but if he has a 5 year old graphics card that just fits in the case, then a brand new one probably wouldn't fit. Unless something has changed since last I checked, graphics cards are bigger than they used to be. Then again, I have no idea what parts were available 5 years ago, so if it was top of the line then, it might be good enough now.
@magepker He's probably cannibalizing his old computer for some of those parts.

His 5 year old cpu fan isnt going to be any good and thats if its even compatible which i doubt.
and most 5 year old PSU's are like 300w... not even close to power his GPU >_<

Barebone kits are not much cheaper..
example
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... CatId=2846
= 799.99 (its on sale regular 899)
all parts separate from the same site
756~
and 5 years ago was 2005..8800 gt was out early 2006 and that needed a lot more than 300w lol.
My computer from 2001 had a 450w psu in it =\

You just went to tigerdirect and grabbed the most expensive AMD build >_> Also.. That AMD computer is MUCH better then the pc he built... plus... that extra $43 is a GPU or an optical drive.
ehem... >http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7039394&CatId=333
or a nice i3 build http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... 05|&Sort=1

uhhhhhhh you get a cpu fan with it.
you will need a new PSU unless you bought it yourself (not brand named) and also if the case is brand named (unless you want to rewire the case to work.)

Actually it is the OEM that does not come with the heatsink and stuff. At least from what I have heard.

No lol I took a barebone kit you linked in some other topic and just compared the prices with all separate parts. The point wasn't that this particular barebone kit was more expensive, but that barebone kits are not cheaper than buying separate parts.
Also there's no GPU included in that barebone kit and there's no optical drive either.

Re: New Comp
The one i linked to (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... &CatId=333) Does have an optical drive, all its missing is a GPU.
And since the topic starter didnt mention a dvd drive, it shouldnt matter >_<
and heres a nice GPU for $50 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... CatId=2306
>_> problem solved.
and your saying that you dont save any money but you clearly showed a $50 saving and an overall better PC.
and heres another PC build
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... CatId=5205
$70 cheaper then buying the parts seperate.

Re: New Comp
The case I have is more than large enough. PSU is 500W and is handling my overclocked cpu + SLI so I might be able to use it (fermi core is more power efficient than the earlier nvidia cards). If not then I'll upgrade.
And yes, all other parts are being salvaged.
Price is now 416 after rebate since prices went down

Uh...You linked both of those. I just picked one randomly..to show a point. Whether or not the other linked kit has an optical drive or not is irrelevant because I didn't analyze those prices.. And I didn't show $50 savings when you buy the bare-bone, I showed a $50 savings when you buy the parts separately which is what I said 2 posts in a row..
And since the topic starter didn't mention a dvd drive neither did I, until you did, which is why I said it didn't include one...which is where you said the other money goes to (along with a non existant gpu).
As for that last example I really don't want to go through the trouble of looking up all the prices again..so I'm just going to ignore it.
And there you have it.

Re: New Comp
Seperately bought CPU does indeed come with heatsink + fan... or atleast, mine did (intel i5 760), i still bought a seperate fan with it though.
What's wrong with ATI cards though xD?
I've had two nvidea cards, one that made my entire pc chrash because of a corrupt driver, had to download older ones after i managed to get my pc running again >.< the other burned out after half a year.

Nothing wrong with ATI cards, I've just had good experiences with nvidia cards.
