New Facebook Profile

Post by Vaya »

A New Introduction

The profile begins with a quick overview of basic information such as where you're from, where you went to school, and where you work—the kinds of conversation starters you share with people you've just met or exchange with old friends as you get reacquainted.

And since there's often no better way to learn about a person than through photos, the profile now includes a row of recently tagged photos of you. In my case, my profile features pics from my engagement and wedding, two of my life's most recent and happiest moments.

Featured Friends

You can now highlight the friends who are important to you, such as your family, best friends or teammates. Create new groups of friends, or feature existing friends lists. I opted to feature my Ultimate Frisbee teammates, giving the rest of my friends a way to learn more about that part of my life.

New Experiences

The profile also gives you new ways to share your interests and activities. You can list the projects you worked on at your job, classes you took in school, your favorite musicians and sports teams, and more. You can also share your life philosophy by connecting to the religions, political affiliations, and people you follow and admire. All your interests and experiences are now represented with images, making your entire profile a more compelling visual experience.

Personally, I opted to add this profile project to my work history at Facebook, and I tagged the people who worked on it with me. I also added "Ultimate Frisbee" as one of the sports I play and included a description of my team's victories at the USA Ultimate National Championships and World Championships.

Improved Photos and Friends Pages

Thanks to the cool new "infinite scroll" feature, it's now much faster and more fun to browse all your photos. The Friends page now allows you to quickly find the people you're looking for: just search by name, hometown, school or a number of other dimensions. I met a ton of new Ultimate players at Nationals, and the new profile has made it so much easier to locate and learn about them.

We're really excited about the new profile. We're rolling it out gradually and plan to get it to everyone by early next year. You can upgrade immediately or learn more about the new features on this page: www.facebook.com/about/profile.

Here's an example:

I like it, but still need some time to get used to it.

It's still optional, but if you choose to try it you won't be able to roll back to the old one.

It's not that hard to work with really, but individuality would be more fun if you could also edit the background, then I'd totally ditch my Hyves.

I feel so sorry for all you pathetic Facebook guys!

Nah, I just don't use Facebook myself as I've never really had the "drive" to go around and let everybody know everything about my private life. And I don't have some insanely urger to "have more friends" than the others. I'm not just in for that race! I prefer sticking with friends in real life instead of sitting behind a computer posting updates every 10 seconds.
OH MI GOD! He's going to the toilet, and he's so tired today!
Yeah, like I wanna know, lol

Lots of flamming to be done, I guess so I better end by writing something a bit more meaningful in relation to the thread:
People from my class have complained a lot today about the new Facebook profile page. Not even one of them liked it, lol. Yeah, I had a great day at school :sohappy:

The appeal of facebook is much more then just a status update it keep you in contact with friends and family the world over, can enable you to make contact with people you lost contact with. For companies the advertisement opertunitys means they can target specific groups of people. These are just the two biggies there are so many other reasons why its popular.

That's true, but it's just sad to see young people ruining their future. At least in Denmark this is how it works:
1) You've finished university/whatever and you're now ready to get a job
2) You ask around and finally some company seems to have a bit interest in you
3) You send in a Job Application.
4) The company reads it, and checks out your facebook/twitter profile. This is where it gets tricky. If I were the leader of a company I would never employ somebody who seems lazy (updates like; "Didn't go to school today, **** the teachers anyway" might sound fun right now but in the future it might come right back to you and hit you in your face.

All I'm saying is that what you're doing online DOES have consequences if we're talking about Facebook.
I'm not saying that Facebook is like this little "evil" thing that wants to ruin your life, not at all. I'm simply pointing out that before uploading endless pictures of you, dead drunk, it might be worth the consideration whether or not it's worth it.

I, as one of the few persons in my class who does not use Facebook, might of course look a bit cut off when it comes to for example a party invitation, which is now going through Facebook. However, I still prefer going directly to the person and say whether I can come or not.

And yeah, I know, this post is getting very school orientated but that's because that is where I go to ever day (a business school). Even though I previously said that I don't see Facebook itself as "evil" it does have some very bad effects. The other people in my class tend to be on Facebook 90% of the day (The school day). This means that they do not hear what the teachers says. Also, it results in less homework and studies being done as they usually spend their time sitting on Facebook, chatting. This, of course, all ends up in lower standard degrees.
If you have any doubt, search on google. There is a study made by some university in England, showing that using Facebook in average (yes, it's an average) makes you go one grade down!

Trick is, never post anything on your facebook you wouldn't want a potential employer to see. In other words, make your damn tagged pictures private so only your friends can see.

+1. I like it the way it is. And yes I really wish they would just keep it the same for a while. I'm sicking of it always changing. I don't get on much and when I do I'm constantly having to adapt to the new site changes, pretty annoying if you ask me.

Yeah, but then your (eventually) future boss will you just add you as friend. Or if you know his name he'll just get another employee to do it, and then get information about you.

Good privacy settings and dont accept people you dont know well, especially when searching for a job. I though that was obvious but I guess some people can't resist the urge of seeing their friend count go up by one.

You're confusing Twitter and Facebook son.

+One trillion gazillion, background customization is horrible, I hope they NEVER implement it.

That and put a profile picture that you're not on it and use a derivative of your name.
Lets say your name is Micheal Moore, you can just put Mike M. or thing like that.
Combined with a prfile picture that ain't you, no one is gonna find you.

True, a lot of people can't resist seeing who it is, and tons of people want their friend count to be as high as possible. It's just pathetic.

PureStr wrote:You're confusing Twitter and Facebook son.

I never knew people were like that on Twitter? Well, I guess the problem is that twitter is barely used at all here in Denmark. However, people on Facebook actually do act like this. At least in Denmark (this was very generalizing, not everybody is like that, obviously).

But if you're never gonna post anything on Facebook that actually has something to do with you, then why even use Facebook? I mean, it's kind of the purpose of Facebook, right? Finding people you once knew and get in contact with them again.

Im only going to address 2 points here mainly due to laziness

Your first point about it been used by employers isnt totally relevent for one you should already be careful to what you post if you do post something risky hide it, iv posted things i dont want family to see its quite simple to exclude certain people from reading it. With the ever growing array of privacy settings as time goes on what you post will be less of a problem outside of facebook. Hell iv even posted on my facebook i was getting drunk at work the manager of that department didnt care much hell she didnt say anything at all so you might find its not been used in a malice way by everyone. The storys you read about people getting fired because of facebook you might want to note how reckless what they said was, insulting the boss or posting pictures of you out clubbing when you called in sick. They deserve what they get, if i call in sick when im ok i dont even go near my workplace and just watch what i say to people same goes for facebook.

Your second point i want to address is how its a distraction both at work and your studies this is a common thing but boils down to moderation. It's their choice and facebook been there isnt the problem its the person. i used to go on it when at college but i was doing work at the same time, i go on it on my mobile but im stil working at the same time although i dont admit to doing that as im not meant to have my phone on me at work, but same goes for silkroad, wow even srf just got to moderate your time on it.

If your so worried about your employers finding out things through your FB, just don't post stupid, possibly incriminating, shit.

Problem solved.

I actually mainly agree with you. I tried to point out the same thing; It's not Facebook itself, it's the people who uses it. However, you can't deny that if they didn't use Facebook, they would have more time to do other stuff (I'm still talking a bit school related here).

I know a lot of people who are done with school still uses Facebook but what I'm trying to lighten up is the problem of Facebook being used in school time. Now, you might say that people are on SRF etc. at school too. That might be true BUT they don't use it as much as they use Facebook, not at all. A lot of people are starting to get addicted to Facebook and I'm sure we'll soon see the first Facebook rehab center. It's already been in the news that several organizations wanna start such a center. But again, it's the users and not the site itself, I know :)

Before I started college I tried to look up my roommate on Facebook. I found that he had none, and thought to myself, "@$#*! I have to live with a @$#*ing loser all year!"

Sure enough, he turned out to be a fat, lazy moron who sat in our room 24/7 playing WoW.

If you are 16-22, you better have a damn Facebook account. If you don't, there is a reason for that, and it is because you are awkward and have no irl friends. If I were an employer and was looking to hire a guy out of college today, if they didn't have a Facebook I would have doubts about them. Credentials are only half of anything in life. Your sociability is much more important.

Now, listen up for a second. Try to read what you just wrote.

You're saying that using Facebook is social? I can tell you that playing WoW is just as social, which is very little! Basically in both WoW and Facebook you sit in front of your pc, pressing buttons. Wouldn't it be more social to go out with your friends instead of just sitting there, commenting on a awkward picture of your best friends ex-girlfriends holiday?
Maybe I'm just weird but to me that sounds more like it.

Take me for example: I don't use Facebook, which means I have WAY more time for actually BEING with my friends instead of just nerding off at the computer. And you're saying that using Facebook gives you social experience? Well, I can tell you one thing. If you spent the last 4 years of your life sitting on website commenting and thought that was social, then you'll get a huge surprise when you find out that you aren't actually that good at talking with people in real life!
