Parents and gaming

Post by bergon »

Here's the deal, I'm 18, a Senior in High school, and living with my parents until I go to college next year.

Now, I enjoy gaming. I really do. I love being able to have conversations with random people across the internet, like you. But my parents absolutely hate the idea of me gaming. Their biggest complaint being that they think it's a waste of time. Which is partially true. But then again, so are so many other things we do in life. Yet if you enjoy something, is it really a waste of time?

My question is, how can I get my parents to chill on the whole anti-gaming thing? Is it even possible?

*The other option is to just suck it up until I move away for college and then go crazy. But who here wants to go 10ish months without gaming? I mean srsly.*

do something that is worst than playing games.

"Hey dad, i'm going to go rape men now, instead of play games."
"Hey dad, i'm going to go shop lift."
"Hey dad, i'm going to the club all night."
"Hey Dad, i'm going to experiment on cats and dogs."

That's what i did, i slept with over 300 people.

Well, isn't all entertainment a waste of time? Why watch football? Why watch movies? Aren't those two a waste of time too? I mean, they both take up time, and they are both entertaining.

My point is, people do a lot of things to waste time. For some reason, parents think games are the most wasters of time. Sure they may be, but there are lot of things that "waste" time, you just happened to choose video games. Look at what your parents do, you can probably find out what they do to "waste" time as they define it and you can use that against them. If you can't find anything, well your parents must not like entertainment lol

May not be the best argument, but that's my view of it.

The best thing I managed to do with my parents, is try to have them see the similarity between Tv/movies and games. After they've gotten that idea digested, I started one-upping movies by talking about how games are interactive, which is more than any movie ever can be. This slowly caused them to accept gaming as a medium of enjoyment, which is no more or less meaningful than movies in their eyes, and that was more than I had hoped to accomplish.

As for the waste of time, in my opinion, anything that causes you enjoyment is automatically never a waste of time.

That is, in my opinion true. In my post I was kinda referring to what the parents are thinking. If games are a waste of time, so must a lot of other things.

Just show your parents that you could be doing other stuff which could land you in trouble. Just like KylieMinogue said. And also show them that gaming itself isn't a waste of time but spending too much time doing anything can be unhealthy.

My mom bugs me about gaming aswell, as a waste of time, but i usually say some random statement about it and she leaves it like that.

Same problem here i guess.
My parents always act as if i game like 8 hours a day, which is why steam time registering is pretty allright.
The problem is, they set certain demands on everything i guess.
Then they want me to be more outgoing, then i should stay home more, then i should spent far more time on my studies, then i should stop gaming, then i should start playing soccer again more, whatever i do it wont be good for to long anyhow.

Just do what you enjoy, but know your own limits.
If you enjoy gaming all day, thats fine- but if it drags down your social side and your grades in school, you need to fix your priorities.

I love my dad.

When I was younger (read 4-11ish) he used to work evenings. On weekends he would get home around 1 am.

I used to wake up with him sitting next to me in my bed playing SNES. We would play wings over Europe, f15 strike eagle, and un squadron for couple hours. Then he would make fried spam and eggs with white rice, we'd finish it off with soy milk. That was our weekend ritual. We would then watch tv until I passed out, at which point he would go to bed.

He doesn't game anymore and blames it on headaches. But, when he visits or I visit him, he enjoys watching me. One of the last gaming attempts I had with him was installing deer hunter on his computer. He was stuck to his screen for days. When I asked him if he liked it, irritated, he yelled that he had been playing for days and had not seen any Farking deer. That was the last time I saw him game...

Except for trying out punch out on the wii.

Problem is that I have a bad track record when it comes to gaming, particularly with silkroad, I've been playing it since I was like 13-14. And from the age of 13-16ish I played way too much, according to them, which was like 2 hours a day.

So now, with my bad track record, they are all worried that I won't be able to manage my time wisely, which is justifiable, considering my past. I wouldn't play much anyways tbh. It'd just be nice to be able to get on every now and then and chat with old guildies, and what not.

Oh, they've also turned this into a respect "issue" thing. Like, they think I'm disrespecting them by playing, when I know they don't want me to. Which is true I suppose, but is it my fault that they disagree with something I enjoy? Wth am I supposed to do?

Sounds to me like you have a bit of an addiction to video games. Your parents probably see it like a drug... yeah... I enjoy doing meth... but that doesn't mean its good for me or the people around me.. :sohappy: (cpinney got me hooked) You're 18 and going to college so I think its too late for them to make any true change in what you do, so it's really up to you whether or not you stop gaming. Just curious, are you asking this question because you want to cut back on your gaming hours or are you just wanting your parents to see it the way you see it? Now I've never met your dad, but your mom is a nice lady, and I think she is right about the situation.

In my opinion, it is not a waste of time. yes, you could be doing other things but isnt gaming entertaining you and dont you enjoy it? then i do not consider it a waste of time. everything that you do and enjoy is never a waste of time. even if you played oh i dont know, silkroad for 5~ years, if you enjoyed it all then i wouldnt consider it as a waste of time

I'm sorry, but at this point it doesn't look like much can be done without "disrespecting" your parents. If they can not see past their ideas, and blame you for playing too much when you only do a couple hours then I think you just have to wait. I, personally, would not be able to sit still with them, and would just play regardless of what they say if it got to that point.

Lol'd.

Want them to see it they way I do. I don't game enough to need to "cut back" the hours I play.

What are you going to college for?

Maybe use the gaming thing as a "I am going to work on computers/software/programming in college" prelude.

Does any of you parents have a hobby?
My mom reads a shit tons (maybe more than I actually game)
And my father likes to go on bicycle rides (for like weekends)

Not that they want me to stop gaming, but when I told them it was MY hobby and they also had theirs, they understood.
Now, this is the tricky part: time for your parents to take their head out of their asses.
Your going to college next year, you're old enough to make your own decisions. (Thats how it worked for me)

BUT, if you still play sro and have a capped char, a +9 weapon and a full nova set or things like that; then they are right and you should stop MMOing. Start playing games that actually required skills to play (Ex: NHL, FIFA or Madden)
