If you want a good mmo, you should really play wow. If you don't want to pay to play, don't waste time playing "free" to play mmos. That's my opinion, based off my own experience of playing free mmos then playing wow. In your case I would honestly just play what your friends are playing.

RACIST BASTARD!!!!!!111one
Ontopic, yeah I completely agree with Master Kojito, my experience is 100% identical. I played loads of free games, but when you pay for it (WoW) you know you're getting new content on a regular basis.

Even then it's a matter of preference. I didn't like the way WoW played so I chose sro over WoW even with the shit community and what not. But well, I do recommend checking out WoW. You can get 10day trial on www.trywow.com I think. If not just google wow trial hehe.
Never bothered going for P2P MMORPGs. Since someone already suggested Cabal, I'd say maybe Battle of the Immortals or Vindictus. Never tried Vindictus but I have friends from my old MMOs that recommended it. As for BOI, I have to warn you that PVP there is completely imbalanced. Especially against people who WASTED like $500 on upgrading stuff. The only reason I liked it was because of the pet system -- the great ones are expensive and a pain in the ass to get but it's possible. I have to confess that I played the role of a con-artist in that game and scammed some people to be able to afford Zodiac/Rare pets within 1 week (which I ended up giving away in the end). Otherwise, without spending real $, it would've been extremely time-consuming to get even one. Anyway, I'm rambling on too much.
tl;dr -- Battle of the Immortals, Cabal, Vindictus.
SRO- its better nowadays Vindictus- I'm reading about how good it is, thinking of trying it Kitsu Saga- anime style graphics but the game is fun Iris Online- anime gfx but haven't tried it so meh
I wouldn't recommend insanity to everyone, but its always worked for me. For me, insanity is super sanity. The normal is psychotic. Normal means lack of imagination, lack of creativity.
Not P2P? WoW or Aion would have been two good games.
RoM - I havent played runes of magic for a while, but I heard its pretty good game nowdays, altough its similiar to WoW and animations arent that great.
Silkroad - It is indeed getting better, they have many events and no traffic anymore, but it still has looong way to go.
Battle of Immortals - I played it and it kidna seemed boring
Forsaken World - New game from Perfect World, is currently in Pahse 2 of closed beta. Altough what i heard its one remake of PWI other games, very similiar to Jade Dynasty by interface, and still kinda buggy, but remeber its still in closed beta
