my girlfriend and I are planning to make a trip in Europe this summer, and she planned to spend 2 days in holland, wich kinda piss me off since she want to stay 2 weeks in italy, its not that i hate people with mustache and spaghetties but I feel that there's alot more to see in holland then the prostitute and the coffeshops.
so could you guys help me with these, we should be there around the second week of july so what's nice to visit in holland? any events going on?

Re: NL people
Well, it's a lot of fun to head to the biggest cities of the NL, Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and experience the huge differences between them (architecture contrast is HUGE Rotterdam is all new and shiny while Amsterdam is all old and beautiful. Both awesome if you walk out of the central stations towards the city centers. Maybe also the Euromast while you're in Rotterdam.
The Ann Frank museum in A'dam is also a load of fun. You really see how she managed to stay the world champion of Hide and Seek for so long.
Giethoorn, so much fun. I live close to there so I can tell for sure. The cities of Steenwijk, Meppel and Zwolle nearby are also fun to visit.
Head to "'t Gooi" for some luls. It's the Beverly Hills/Malibu of the netherlands. It's not hot and there are no beaches, but it's the place where a fuckload of famous Dutch people own a house, magnificent architecture, beautiful houses. Still waiting on a Dutch version of MTV's Cribs.
The North is only fun for the big cities. Leeuwarden, Groningen, and Assen are fun, but to get there is a drag with a boring view.
Als visit the two fisher villages, Urk and Volendam. Urk is known for being very old and religious, Volendam is known for the fish and the fuckload of singers being born and raised there (the music is annoying but the village is pretty hilarious)
But during summer, there's always some event going on here and there, and so where ever you go you can find something fun.
+ Shopping in the NL isn't very expensive, =/= fun for your girlfriend. Shopping Mecca's:
Maastricht, all the way down south.
Leeuwarden/Groningen, all the way up north.
Zwolle/Enschede, bit more in the middle, with Enschede being in the far East.
Amsterdam/Utrecht/Rotterdam/Haarlem/Den Hague, West.
I go shopping too much.

lol stay away. holland is empty. The 5 days I spent in italy were more fun than the last 5 years I've spent in NL.

Re: NL people
Depends on what kinda stuff you're looking for.
Giethoorn is a little village over here, nicknamed 'Little venice' its all water, you can rent boats there etc.
It also often enough has music festifals etc.
You could visit one of the Wadden sea islands, i've been to Terschelling a couple of times and that sure was awesome ^^
You could visit some sight-seeing spots, it all depends on what you and your girl like i guess ^^

Re: NL people
go to Madurodam, which is Holland, but then in a very small size.
if you like attraction parks, go to De Efteling.

Re: NL people
Doron's tips are pretty good.
@ above, Yeah, De Efteling is definitely a good destination.
Mid july, might I suggest Scheveningen? Really cosey atmosphere during the nights with hundreds of lights, and lots of cafes and bars along the shore (it's close to a'dam so airplane friendly). There's a big pier where you can do loads of fun things etc. There's a casino, all kinds of resteaurants, and loads of other places to go out and have a good time. Plenty of hotels too.
There is also quite a few recreative places. Sea Life is really fun.
I have been here twice (I live in the south of holland), and both times I really felt like I was out of the country. Really really enjoyed it here

EDIT: added night time picture.

Re: NL people
But I could really recommend you go out and find the Capitool travel guide about the Netherlands. Working in a tourist office for half a year I found out that the Capitool travel guides are the best in any case, with plenty of text, good pictures, maps and cut-troughs of famous buildings of that location.
It'll give you loads of ideas.
