Gaming computer.

Post by Tasdik »

Whats needed in order to have a decent gaming computer? How much would it cost? *Estimate*

I'm not talking about the most bad ass rig ever or anything. I'm fine with just half bad ass. Considering I've used old Dell's and an Acer, with no special graphics cards, or improved memory, anything would be better then what I've currently got.

core i5 or maybe i7 (mind the socket!)
4gb ddr3
Windows 7 (Home Premium or Pro or Ultimate) 64bit
nvm about 64bit architecture (all the new hardware is 64bit capable)
I'd go for the GTX240 1gb ddr5 (iirc) - good price/prestation

Find yourself a suiting mobo for the above >.>

Can't say the price for u cuz every country has a different economy, exchange rates, shipping rates, taxes, ...

Budget?
Do u also have to buy a new HD? DVD-Drive? Case? Power Supply?

When buying a new graph card: ALWAYS check the size, cuz they won't always fit in some smaller cases ><

Phenom II X3 720 or Athlon 2 X4 620-640 close to $100 and can perform well while gaming.

GTS 450 should be good for a screen around 19in ~$130 thats max graphics though so something smaller could do if you don't need max.

AMD 890gx chipset can get one for around $100 however the 785G can be cheaper.

PSU 550W should be good enough they are about $50

everything else differs so much it does not really matter. you could get a $20 case or a $100 thats up to you.

Intel in my experience is not for a budget system. from what your saying you don't want the best out of the best. AMD will fit your needs just fine.

mine cost about $700 a year ago. could probably get the same parts for $600. that is if some of the parts are still sold.

Lol

High end - intel Core i5, ati 5870/5970

mid - intel Q6600 (or better quad, but this is very overclockable), ati 5850/nvid gtx 460

lower mid - high end dual core (intel e8600 possibly), nvid gtx 265/275 or ati 5650

all with sufficient PSU, 4gb RAM minimum.

32bit/64 bit doesn't matter but if you want to be "future proof" (ya right), might as well get 64 bit.

I'd core for the i5 or i7 at this time personally, but that's because I've had my Q6600 for almost 3 years now (it runs amazingly). You can switch up the processors and gfx cards too..core i5 with a ati 5850 or gtx 460 is still great.

Price ranges from $600-$1000 depending. Your best bet is to search around for these parts on newegg, if you see something else but you're not sure, google it (for example you see a core i3, you could google "core i3 vs core i5" and see how it stacks up and make a decision). Also if this IS for gaming, get a 24" monitor that does 1080p resolution or the 16:10 equivalent.

And yes, you would have to build it yourself to get the best price/performance. The motherboard/PSU/RAM/HDD etc pale in comparison to how the other parts should be picked. Any 7200 RPM harddrive will do, and most RAM will do as well. PSU just make sure it's rated high enough, you can mostly see this by looking at your GFX card info. Motherboard..as long as it's compatible you should be fine, unless you want to really overclock hard but I'm doubting it =p

Anytime a retailer is selling computers, you can ALWAYS build it for much cheaper, and likely with better parts.

I know it's cheaper, but if this guy is asking these kind of questions, building a computer isn't the best option.

I asked these types of questions before I built my computer. I didn't know anything before I built my computer and it turned out alright. Honestly before I built my computer I thought I'd get an intel something, like an i5. I now have a AMD quad core and wouldn't have it any other way. $100 vs $200 (this was a year ago) now I have my quad clocked at 3.2GHz not much can slow it down.

Alienware are a bit on the pricey side...but they are so worth it. But I'm sure you could find a decent priced gaming computer at Best Buy.
