I live about 3 miles from my school, as well. I've been walking home a lot more lately because I just can't be bothered getting on an annoying bus. The walks take me like 1h30m, but it gives me lots of time to think.
My work is 40km's each way, so there's no way in hell I'd be walking that. I do, however, go running a lot after work. I'll stretch, warm up for 10 minutes then run around 8-12kms, more when I'm feeling really fit. Feels quite good and insanely relaxing while listening to my ipod

You should try not listening to music. You learn to look at your surroundings and just think, I think it's much more fulfulling.

Scared of going crazy and bringing a shotgun to work?
If anything, it's the other way around. I work in a very.. 'rough' workplace. The magority of people who work there have part time jobs as pig/deer hunters. I know half of them carry around rifles in the back of their cars, I'd be shot down in seconds -.-
My house is relatively close to my college so i mostly drive there, sometimes I go via metro+bus
Spoiler!
I wouldn't recommend insanity to everyone, but its always worked for me. For me, insanity is super sanity. The normal is psychotic. Normal means lack of imagination, lack of creativity.
