idk abt the hd, should be fine

and i think the mobo has 3+ slots for ram, couldnt tell

huge no to the mobo nd cpu, also get the 460 or 465 better value and drains less power. but your theory build

the hd i chose is one of the fastest mechanical drives out atm the samsung spinpoint f3 is nearly as fast as you will ever get, good idea buying cable iv got loads of sata and such about so not a prob for me but deffo a good idea not everyone has them about nd these days when you get a harddrive you dont get any but i can tell you that you get 2xsata cable with the m4a mobo i have a m4n78 in my system atm not far off.

the processor and mobo are compatible, and so it the ram, if all of that were put together it would work fine

well the ram was the thing its overkill for what your doing trust me get cheaper ram then that you dont need dominator for that processor/cpu combo also the antec 650w psu will be more then enough its better then that psu

Lol that last build has me crackin up. Mainly the PSU and RAM.

If you are going air, and can find it for cheap..I highly recommend the Hyper 212+. Excellent performer for the price. So good in fact that newegg and other sites raised the price of it not too long ago. They used to be suuuper cheap.

the processor and mobo are compatible, and so it the ram, if all of that were put together it would work fine

Sure it would work fine, but you would have a spare stick of RAM sitting on your desk. AM3 (nor any AMD) supports triple channel DDR3.

yah but a 700w is good for aging, since capacitor aging adds more load

and first of all I'm not a rookie

I buy and build intel proc. pcs anymore but back from 04-06 I used amd chipsets, Only ever had 2-4 ram slots, no triple, so I never knew. And the fan is fine, good enough rpm, and I never stick with a stock cooler (bad experiences) so why not upgrade a little

^^this is why i posted it and no i dont need more for 1 5970 but if i add another later i would need to upgrade my psu. ftw 750w is on my build

and gaige your system isnt even using much mroe then 500w aprox maybe less i cant remember what the power draw was on the 470 under load but nether the less the antecs will last you a long time, ensure a stable feed so less glitchs due to your power fluxing

I could put a 6000rpm fan on a thermaltake HSF...won't make it any better of a design.

even then, it allows room for later upgrade too, of course even I did upgrade it'd be the video card, that'd change the requirements depending on how much power it need, xfx I find has some of the best power management cards

Is the Athlon II X4 635 a good one? For a casual gamer?

I've thinking of getting of it but dont know anything about that particular line of CPUs.

i have the 620 and i can play games with no issues. the amd 640 is 3ghz for $107 on newegg.....i bought my 2.6ghz for $100 :( was when it first came out though.

and idk i haven't noticed any issues for the lack of l3 cache and basicly thats the only thing that stands in the way between the athlon and the phenom. in fact i read (i think tomshardware) did a benchmark with a 955 clocked down to 2.6ghz and the performance difference was not that far off. if the 620 was clocked a little higher it would be a tie

Ok Amarisa thanks.

Im thinking of OC'ing it to 3.2ghz. Basically raise the FSB up 20 to 220.

And you can do that on stock cooler so thats shweet.

what is with this comparing a inferior chip to a better one and saying stuff like
with a 955 clocked down to 2.6ghz

the 955 is better full stop and its not that expensive so imo its a more worth while upgrade

because its not an inferior chip? the main thing the 955 has on the 620 is clock speed and l3 cache. otherwise everything else is pretty much the same.

if you got the 640 all your really paying is $50 for an upgrade of .2ghz and 6mb of l3 cache to go with the 955. $40 for 945 but your only buying l3 cache.

yes the Phenom will be faster it always will be. but is $50 worth .2ghz and l3 cache? depends on the person. i would rather buy an i5 or the x6 cpu for $100 more then get the 955.

it is an inferior chip the points your making essentially suggest you want to stagnate in old hardware we pay for upgrades l3 cache and +mhz is what an upgrade is about well not the l3 cache sepecifically but an upgrade suggesting a new or better chip with more features or improved features

Hmm. 635 Inferior, orly nao?

L3 Cache makes very little difference if your just doing some gaming.

Also pretty sure you can unlock L3 Cache and make it into a Phenom II

Also clock speed of .2 more isnt all that great for the price Amarisa said it was.

Also, AM3 sockets will be supported longer, means your spending virtually more money if you go the way of the i7 sockets which will be discontinued soon. i.e spending more money on a mobo.

Generally, if you want to do casual gaming on high-ultrahigh and use the PC for some years to come, go AMD.

If you have tons of cash to spend like an idiot and dont care that you have upgrade so fast, go Intel.

Thread ova! :)

no simple and complicatly put NO.

if you want to be a computer enthusiast you cannot be a fanboy your bumming amd every Farking post without even a slight consideration of the intel range. im not a intel fanboy before you say it but they are better chips and for a high to ultra high end gaming they are better sure the amd has the casual market covered a bit better.

il subside with the 635 arguement but i stil say its a inferior chip to the 955, your points on longer lasting is only based on the am3. L3 cache is handy albiet not overly used so stop with the saying its not used if it wasnt used they wouldnt add it same with hyperthreading it is used it does make a difference.

My goal with this system is to build a good one and keep it up-to-date for the next 3 years before i have to consider a overhaul i dont want a computer thats so far out of date in 3 years its not worth upgrading.

I love how people think having a higher frequency processor means it's better

I remember back in the day on canyourunit.com

Pentium 4 - 2.6ghz = 2.6ghz
AMD Athlon 64 - 2.2ghz = 3.9ghz (meant it was equv to a p4 3.9 ghz proc)

Yeah no kidding. Didn't know you guys where so ignorant when it comes to PCs :palm: . Look bud, trust me and get the Pentium D. Although it is a older generation, it is known for working really well in extreme conditions. You can overcloak it to 5.4 GHz and get it for a fair price. If your looking for some cheap ones, let me know I can hook you up.

At the end, what you guys fail to see is that the i3 & i5 is a renamed Pentium D & Pentium 4.

Also, [SD]Master_Wong, didn't I say you can unlock 6mb of L3 cache, so techincally speaking, it becomes a 955. I.E, 55ish dollars less for teh same thing! :yay:

But why a no? I basically stated that AMD is better for casual and pricewise, but Intel chips are for ultra gaming and people who have boatloads of cash. I mean, 1 grand for a CPU is just

lol I hope this was continued sarcasm from your first paragraph.

But on that note: OP, just get a a Pentium D with Windows ME, MX 4000, and high end 300W psu and maybe a few extra 120mm fans for good airflow over a thermaltake 120 heatsink. Should be an easy 3ghz on air. They have newer 7200 RPM drives..I would stick to IDE I heard sata may be out soon, but who knows.

i dont know much about the athlon and this unlocking l3 cache afaik athlons dont have any l3, they physically cut it out, they didnt just deactivate it. Even if you unlock it, you'll experience some problems you probably don't want to experience.

so again stop saying its the same its not and your starting to get annoying with this subject.
