anyone own boats?

Post by _Equal_ »

Yeah, I know it's odd to ask about boats even in OT, but was just curious since a few Americans are here.

I'm looking at this boat

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d175/ ... ike005.jpg

19' with 85 hp outboard, it's a lot nicer as I currently have a little 15' with a 50 horse Merc.

Anyone else own boats or been on a lake?

Do you live close to the beach/lake?
*Yes -> Get one.
*No -> Get a bike.

I see so many people here who have a boat, but they live so far from the coast O.o They only use the boat like twice a year :/

Jeanneau Sun Way 29, owned by my dad and I. My family, - well my Dad and me mostly, as my mother and brother are always afraid when there's a strong wind lol - been into the sailing thing as long as I can remember, and still we sail nearly every weekend if there's enough wind.
We used to have Etaps, a 22 and a 26 ft, and they make good, reliable ships, but a Jeanneau is just so much faster.

I have a newer Bayliner, 2005 I think. It's in great condition, and runs fine, but since the one you are looking at is a bit older you may have have different issues with it.

Make sure the vinyl is in good shape, check the motor and especially lower unit/prop, that shit gets expensive to fix.

Spoiler!

Sorry, I live in Minnesota, for those who don't know, it's the state with 10,000+ lakes. There are lakes in downtown Minneapolis, probably 35% of people own boats here and use the lake :)

Saltwater boats are bigger - like the one Ruyi's family has (nice f*kin' boat, I am jealous!)

After posting this I went looking and found numerous references to the early-to-late 80's Bayliners being problematic, nothing specific, sometimes the hulls get damaged easily and screws/bolts rust out I guess. I'm looking around more, but that one above was a nice looking boat interior-wise.

Yeah, motor is usually the most expensive thing to replace/service. Vinyl I can do, I have a friend :)

Anyway, still looking at Rinkers, Crestliners, Alumacraft and Lunds. Cheap Lunds are really hard to find here.

Tx for your response, glad to see someone else enjoying summer with their boats.

My uncle had a Rinker that was like 500 lbs heavier than our Bayliner, so it needed a V6, lemme tell you, it gave him nothing but trouble and gas was freakin expensive.

Edit: They make Rinkers about 30minutes from my lake.

I make plenty of money to buy myself toys, so yeah.

I have friends who do not have nearly as much and I help them out. But in the long run, who should tell me how to spend it?

The one in the original post? Well, it's a 1988 with a 1992 motor, trailer, and some extra stuff. Only about 3 grand.

Boats depreciate faster than cars do :) after about 5 years they get a bit cheaper. My sister's husband has one that he bought almost new, it's a 17' 2008 Lund w/ motor/trailer matched, paid $12k for it I think.

Im jealous.
I'dd love to have a boat, but they're so expensive and i cant use it to much.
I've been on the water enough, we used to go every year.
I've used mainly a 9.9 horsepower Quiksilver, but used a friends Bayliner a couple of times, it had 150 horsepower, pretty damn awesome boat.

A friend of mine actualy made his own boat with his (navy) father, 250 horspower and insanely fast, took around 3 years to built though.

My parents have a pretty nice boat, and an old one that they used to use that needs a serious overhaul.

On holidays and during the summer we take it out to lakes and the ocean. The 4th of July and fireworks are always more fun when you're a mile from shore.

Now that's what I'm talking about! Is Jeanneau the maker that doesn't use back stays?

Anyway, I have a 18' Sol Cat catamaran in pretty bad condition that I bought and meant to fix up, but never had the time :cry: So I'm trying to sell it, maybe looking at getting something like an FJ if I can pick one up from craigslist. Will look for picture after posting this.
