Revolutionary Intel chip uses light to send data

Post by William-CL »

http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_15616178?nclick_check=1

The Santa Clara chipmaker said the fingernail-size research prototype already can move 100 hours of digital music or 45 million tweets in a second from one device to another. And the company expects to make one eventually that can transmit a laptop's hard drive in one second and the entire printed collection of the Library of Congress in less than two minutes.

Wow.. That's pretty sweet.

Eventually they'll use the same shit for everything in the computer instead of electrical pulses.

It will be a good day when they do. Data being sent faster and cooler means more powerful hardware.

So when every company produces light technology, will this mean that we will reach our processing limit?

No, the next step is sending data through invisible wormholes :sohappy:

On a serious note, I don't think so. BUT this will greatly increase it. Brings a whole new meaning to the term "Light Speed"

Get me a Light Speed Flash Drive. Gosh dang that sounds so cool to say.

Hopefully, this will mean some technology will become cheaper, I'd like to see if they can use it for long distance transfers as well. Lightspeed internet, no more lag ever again in any game. *nerdgasms*

Omg I hope so. Less than 10 latency would be amazing as well. 0 is LAN speed. Although so fast we don't notice it, that'd be just as good. Most common is over 100.. To even cut that in half would be a great jump.
Moreover, because the chips are made of the same material the company uses for its brainy microprocessors, Intel envisions mass producing these "silicon photonic links" at low cost, making them practical for use in everything from personal computers to smartphones

^ I'm liking the way that sounds. They are already working on practical uses.
They also go to say it will be another 5 years at least.. but still. That is sooner than you think.

Very rarely does any kind of technology make me excited... This is one of those times.

From what it sounds like, it'll only affect the machine directly, and not outside of it (like internet). I'm only going off of Blackdragon's explanation. So maybe the article does go over something about internet.

I don't see anything in the article about it. The quote was from the article. Although this could be a great step towards cheaper + faster internet. I think it is implied though because they talk about transmitting information and this is from the article as well.
Although telecommunications systems already transmit data with light beams, the equipment used to send or receive that information can cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars, Rattner said. By contrast, he said, Intel hopes to get the cost of its photonic chips down to $1 apiece.

A frikking single dollar for a chip.. WOW.

Could you imagine internet around the world at 1Tb/sec Even a 1GB/Sec upload.

gravity > light
gravity is instant. If you increase the mass of the computer in a location, instantly another location will feel it :D

so this is only implemented network connection? And i thought, intel is using this light thingy instead of those microchips as replace for processors :(

But still good find though. I think my Data Communication's Teacher is gona have an Orgasm after i send the link to his email :P

I thank you for the info :D

Ok, but it's even better if you tell him/her directly, face to face. He/she will jump on you and rape you.

The graviton particle may not exist. The space bending space may not be true. But it's true that 2 objects are getting closer to each other.
