What exactly is a mainstream religion to you?

And that changes everything.

Out of those 5, Buddhism makes the most sense to me. :]

And of course there idea's are based off even older findings, in fact you could even say most religions are carbon copys of each other, just with a few extra features. Similar to that of LoL, HoN and DotA. See what I did thar? :sohappy:

Yes but this is the part where I yell "FAITH!" then stop and realize that's the equivalent to trolling. The discussion has been resolved, asking "what about faith" is just begging to incite a negative response from some of our more passionate members.

tl;dr,

Kill-Joy. :slap:

Buddhism

Buddhism slides under the radar because many consider it a "lifestyle."

I don't even try anymore.

Every discussion I have with a theist makes me sick to my stomach because you can't reason with someone who believes that faith is proof for existence.

When someone tries to discuss religion with me I just find myself nodding in the same way I nod to kids talking about Santa Claus.

If you need that sort of validation to give your life meaning then that's fine. I just wish theists would leave me alone.

You pretty much summed up how I feel/what I do when I hear the word 'Faith'.

Yeah, it reminds me of conservatives in the United States lol :)
But seriously, that's what gets me. There is no way to convince people. And how is faith proof is another question I never understood, it's like a fairy tale lol

Barotix that one image didn't show up =(

I don't try to use my faith to prove God's existence. It's more of a "just for me" kinda thing. So I'm not gonna try to convert you... with that anyways, but I will use gimmicks! Join today and have 7 wives tomorrow!

Just thought of the irony of me arguing the existence of God with a name like Fiction, and a serial killer as an avatar/sig.

One more thing,

I hate it when people write "Science vs Religion". It's degrading to Science. It's like trying to compare Theoretical Physics to Astrology.

And even that I would give Astrology a leg up over the Bible when we are, in fact, made of star residue. At least there's something tangible in that, although irrelevant.

An appropriate title would be:

Superstition vs Rationality

No =( Just saying, you learned more on the subject. This was a very informative thread, and really breaks the mold. Everyone else seen this going down/up in flames, but it stayed pretty decent.

The thread is about 2 and a half hours old and reaches 2 pages.

This is far from breaking any mold and lacks any information that isn't discussed in a grade 9 social science class.

There's a period in everyone's life where they can finally make the link between things that they know and the real world; where religion is no longer a belief system, but an influence on the the living World.

Once this connection is made, the individual assumes the role of an pseudo-intellectual, making jaded arguments on cliche topics.

These topics, and religion, are the most wearing of discussions. If you search this forum for previous threads, you will find the same points were made, the same conclusions met, and the same rhetoric that's so typical of a 15 year old with access to an online thesaurus.

I'm sorry if I have bursted any bubbles, but this discussion is superficial.

I disagree, I mean in all the other ones, people come in trolling. If you say it's so superficial, why don't you make some arguments that "break the mold."

I'm not 15, you dun hurt my feelin's bro.

Not srs.

I don't find religion / god topics boring or wearing. Sometimes they lead to more philosophical discussion which can be really interesting. On the other hand they can just be a rehash of the same old arguments, but are not all threads just rehashes and remakes of past threads and replies.

this, to add on i am rather sick of the threads on srf about the subject, i feel it has been run into the ground over 9000 times which usually leads to some type of moderation by us, although this time it seems to be a more pleasant discussion, but as well all know that can change in about 2 hours.

At least this provokes thought, right? I'd rather have a discussion then post in some of the other threads we see in the OTL.

This is all I was getting at, Dom. It was a pleasant discussion. I was under the impression that the thread had served it's purpose in helping the topic starter get a better understanding on w/e subject we were just on. IMO it did break the mold... seeing how someone can't post a simple SS or ask a simple question without 5 trolls jumping on him normally.

You don't break a mold and you certainly don't convince someone to drop their belief system.

Proselytization is pure brain washing. The conversion to a religion is the adoption of a predefined belief system that is wrapped in social etiquette.

When you become a Buddhist, you don't just believe in Buddha, you are forced to adopt a set of teachings and a tailored world view. This is what defines someone as a Buddhist, it's the acceptance of these terms. As nice as the teachings are, and as unrestricted as the religion is, there's still something common to all Buddhist and this is what binds them, what categorically defines them as who they are.

This discussion is superficial because Atheism involves zero adoption. Atheism is the rejection of a tailored view. You cannot convert someone to Atheism, let alone persuade people to become Atheists by disproving their beliefs - this is the reason why I no longer even try, why I nod as if they are speaking of Santa Claus.

Being an Atheist isn't about denouncing God, it's about the realization that the World is natural, organic. It's living without the need for self-validation. It's about being comfortable with your person and your role in the Universe.

Letting go of the comforts of religion and being responsible for oneself means taking a step in your progression as an individual. Its part of growing up and maturing.

Sadly, not all of us are able to reach this stage of development. Some of us are dependant on religion to satisfy our psychological needs. As time goes on, and people learn to cope with these needs, religion will disappear. Like an appendix, wisdom teeth, or male nipples, religion will remain only as a reminder of what we once were.

Whats exactly is wrong with wanting to believe in something? Why must it be shown as a negative thing? You claim that "religion won't leave you alone",but I'm curious on how it annoys you as a person? How does lets say me believing in faith will bother you? Arn't we all entitled to our own beliefs?

OP, if you really have interest in this subject and want a discussion there are tons and tons forums dedicated to these subjects. Hell, you don't even have to discuss right away. You just have to go to christianforums.com and read away.

What.

You will need to visit a forum that is open to both sides of the discussion if you want to see the arguments of both sides. Unless christianforum.com has a "skeptics corner" section or something...
