indeed its a very bad idea if i had to use my real name i would be harassed by pervy men trying to get cyberlucky. thats why i don't answer questions like "so you are girl?" before i used to just openly say it if asked but i still got harassed so i just stopped in general.

there are crazy people out there and its best they don't know who i am.

I don't like how Blizzard is choosing to make this information public after the fact. They should've told us this was their intent when they had us upgrade our accounts to battle.net status. They probably had it in the really small print that everyone scrolls through when we agree to something which is a bit misleading even if its legal.

Anonymity is vital to the internet, to the free unfiltered exchange of ideas. People like me like to keep our real life, our internet life, and our game life separate. It allows to operate knowing that no matter what we might say or do or whoever we say or do it to, once we close our browser we don't have to worry about it. Its over and done with and can not impact your real life in any meaningful way. I know alot of you are basically quoting the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory as a great reason for why lifting the veil is a good thing but that door swings both ways. If you post in a moderated space you can report assholes anonymously or respond to them anonymously without fear that they can actually do harm to you. What happens there stays there.

I haven't decided yet if this well keep me from posting on their official forums. I normally only go there when i actually feel the need to discuss something that i think a dev should look into but it will certainly kill the carefree nature of the forums and places that offer anonymity will probably see a rise in traffic and consequently bad posters and spam but nevertheless people exchanging thoughts and ideas. That might be Blizzards intention, to make the official forums a serious place for serious discussion where only serious people go to voice their thoughts, kinda like the EJ forums.

So yeah, anonymity is a bitch sometimes but its not 100% evil, it allows places like wiki leaks and places where people want to step away from their RL (for better or worse) to let their hair down and feel free to say whats on their mind (for better or worse).

Do you really believe this exists on the net? I hope not. Alias or ID, it really doesn't matter as there is no such think as privacy when connecting to the internet.

well i game for a key reason escape, my life isnt bad but its nice to take on a second persona and well not be yourself. in rl im a hell of a lot different from how i am on these forums, if i had my real name id be a lot more cautious and likly wouldnt have got anywhere near as many posts (good or bad).

on here i am a ego maniac, who always had to be right, bold, can be a jerk, plenty of gusto and confidence

in rl im a lot more toned down, im nice, i do stand aside if im wrong (stil like to be right), im less confident aswell

ok not a huge change but a good enough one to be called master_wong/quickstream and not Matt farrell

Călin Andrei - Tudor here, in case someone wondered ^^

This just sounds BAD. I don't know, it just gives me the creeps somehow. I'm the same IRL as I am online, so for me, there wouldn't be any psychological change, if things like these were to be implemented on a wide scale. I've got no connection with Blizzard, though, so this doesn't affect me at all. But the idea itself scares the **** out of me, really.

Good way to stop people from scamming.

Are you serious ... why not stop being retarded, that usually does the trick when dealing with "scams"... I also feel bad that you have to deal with calling people "shadowkittybox22" because we all know that it really matters ...

How others will know me will be decided by me, is pretty pathetic that any1 would just accept being mandated to do anything. All actions should be taken out of free will by all individuals in order to achieve a perceived beneficial outcome.

Exactly, the problem isn't being called Cereal Box 22, the problem is that some1 has ownership over you higher than yourself and can decide what to do with you. I won't go over any of the many pathetic reasons humans have bought and still are actively accepting to basically serve others but what I do want to point out is that ownership over oneself is absolute to oneself ( rather obvious but we as a species aren't even close to understanding this and keep serving others who are willing to take advantage of the less intelligent ).

Here's how I feel about it. I love online forums because of the anonymity associated with many of them. Sure you have the forums that form tight knit communities, but your real life credentials are not necessary to create that community. Even for serious forums like EJ for WoW, you have strangers posting in a heavily moderated setting and it works great without having to release personal information.

That being said, I have frequented B.Net forums a lot, mainly to lurk around in the D&R forums and server forums, and I really don't understand Blizzard's reasoning for this move. Any forum will be spammed, that's just one of the truths of the internet, and I feel like Blizzard will lose more than they gain with this new format. Personally, whatever spam there was I just ignored, and it was definitely not overwhelming spam, just the occasional troll and spambot.

That's another thing I want to touch upon. Voluntary involvement is what Blizzard is falling back on in their post. You don't have to participate if you don't want to.

Now, that's fine and all, but the players also have paid for their time, does that payment solely provide for in-game service, or does that include the peripheral stuff as well? (aka. official forums) As some people in the B.Net forums believe, their payment includes all possible *free* associations with the game, including the non-excludable use of the forums. This new format will feel like an intrusion of privacy for some people, thereby excluding them from a product they paid for. (not my thinking)

I personally am fine with it, because I believe participating on B.Net forums to be a voluntary and not necessary to the enjoyment of the game. I don't see much difference from using your real name on B.Net versus showing your face and name on Facebook. With the newer changes to Facebook, your friend's friends can see you and there's that panel on the side that recommends strangers to add to your friends. Like posting on B.Net forums, Facebook is completely voluntary and you actively choose to use their service, thereby agreeing to the risks associated with their product.

and omg we have a girl on SRF? preposterous

Only in small communities where i have talked and gamed with people together for years do i tell them my real name. That's why no one here knows my name but if you go to my TF2 server they mostly know my name.

Maybe both but. . To prove that Real ID wasn't that bad of an idea, Blizzard employee Bashiok posted his full name: Micah Whipple. Within hours, his Facebook account, mother's name, addresses, phone numbers, and relatives were all found. Since then, he's been getting harassed nonstop, so much that he deleted his Facebook profile and stopped picking up the phone.

2.All idiots, after reading truth 1, will try it.

4.You're smiling now because you're an idiot.
5.You soon will forward this to another idiot.
6.There's still a stupid smile on your face.

How can they assure that you will sign up with your real name...?

because you will use that name for payments with credit card/bank, use that name to retrieve account (requires copy of the passport) and all other services.
