XO-3 and Coca-Cola

Post by Mirosuke »

So i was today on a restaurant, on the wait i picked a magazine and saw an article about OLPC (or something like that One Laptop Per Child)
Anyways, the laptop they were reviewing it's kinda uhm... idk

Spoiler!

What do you guys think? Really futurist?
(sorry if its old or posted already)

On another's news (for avoding creating another topic) The Coca-Cola Company created a new package, very different from what we always used to see: Goodbye to the curves.

The new packaging will be more rectangular, this will be the profitability of the space saved is gained by stacking the bottles to be transferred.
Besides that, it contributes to the nature.

Well, i got bored from the oldie desing. it was time for a change and its looks so COOL! imo.

Lies ! It has always been about money and it will always be like that.

We were drinking this shit from glass bottles, then they found out that plastic ones are cheaper so switched to plastic bottles, now they found out that this kind of bottles are cheaper so they will switch to that kind of bottles.

And the shape is also related about costs/money... They will save from transport fees.

If they can carry lets say 300 Plastic round bottles with same truck they will be able to transport 350 bottles this way.

It is all about money, son. Nothing to do with being more green. My azz is more green than those companies! :)

Edit: More info about bottles:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703672104574654212774510476.html

The new plant-based bottle developed by Coke is composed of 70% petroleum-based and 30% sugar-cane-based materials.

Sweet huh? 30% less petrol is used = 30% lower costs

OLPC Project laptops look nothing like that. o_O If anything, that's purely a concept design and nothing more. Keep in mind that these laptops are targeted to underprivileged children around the world, so a touchscreen design would be highly unlikely.

http://laptop.org/en/laptop/hardware/index.shtml <- Current OLPC deisgn

That Coca Cola design concept was made by Andrew Kim and it is very unlikely that it will ever be used for the actual product since it was only made for a school project and nothing more (again).

@Fug_Dup

You are right about the shape but it is correct that they are changing material. Here it is:

SunChips bags are made from compostable plastic, too. Guess what the side-effect is?

EXTREME NOISE.

Those things are crinkly as hell and as soon as you touch it everyone within 100 miles knows about it.

Wtf is that laptop? I thought they just started the 1 lappy per child project, how are thye moving to tablets already?

And actually that bottle looks super chill, especially the fact that it's built in with faults so that when your done drinking, you can crush it and it helps with stacking.

its a noble idea but the cynical truth is that nothing makes absolutely no difference if the people of X country have no will to change themselves and if the government of X country has no will to do anything better for its people. Spending a billion dollars on cute little laptops to ship out to poor kids in the worst countries on the planet is going to do very very little.

Every country that has become developed did it largely through its own will and determination. Look at germany, look at korea, japan, taiwan, poland, etc etc etc. They all did it pretty much on their own after initial foreign aid. Do people think a country like afghanistan or thailand is truly going to change for the better if they are propped up by foreign help? no way

and the coke bottle thing is a great idea, who cares if its a little harder to grab? Things are only going to get worse anyways regarding our energy usage.

Guys who still talk about rectangular bottles... I suggest you to read Fug_Dup's first post again:

Not really sure what the fuss is about the rectangle cola bottles... What the hell is a milk carton? I spent a lot of grade school lunches drinking from a cube =(. I have drinking glasses that are rectangle. As far as green goes.. of course companies are going to think about money first. They'd save money on that design and be doing the environment a solid. More bottles they can fit in the truck, the less truck loads they'd have to use, and the less gas would be used and on and on. (I'm not up on the weight limit per truck, but I'm sure they aren't going over 80,000lbs.)

On the laptop subject: Those tablets "look" coolish, but in practicality I doubt they'd be the best way to go. I'd understand an Air over one of these.

Also... WTF were you doing on a restaurant? Is this story also related to the guy who shut a McDonalds down?

Agree with this, and these countries need to start building up their tech infrastructure anyway. A few wealthy countries should not have a monopoly on tech exports.

As for the soft drink bottles.. Cool design, but it isn't exactly original. What's next, cube-shaped watermelons?

True, but a cylinder with minimized surface area takes up 27% more space than a hexahedron of the same volume if both are packed in the same configuration. :P
