Death - Thought of it won't let me sleep
So, I'm atheist, and before I go to bed and I begin to think about death, and realize when I die its going to be blank, like before we wee born. It makes me so upset its hard for me to sleep and makes me want to puke. I try to come up with logical ideas so I can calm my idea of death.
I'm thinking since our universe is suppose to expand to then compress and expand then compress for a infinite cycle (only a theory). So my idea is that the next time I could live if the same exact molecule was lined up just the same way when the sperm and egg met (theirs more to it but hopefully you can get my idea.) Though people will think of it as a near impossible chance to make em all meet again at the right spot, wouldn't the fact of the universe expanding and retracting infinite times, wouldn't it eventually have a chance to do it, I mean it would be a long time BUT since your dead you won't know. Then would be be able to know we existed if that would happen?
please no religious shit

You won't notice a thing when you die, you just have to accept the fact that everyone will die eventually.

Everyone dies and you won't revive, simple. You'll have to learn to live with that idea lol. And how can you say no religious things, if you believe in afterlife?

Re: Death - Thought of it won't let me sleep
I'd like to share different opinion with you that may change your mind. It's a short tale called Commended to Life.
"Vitalia had discovered the secret to eternal life. Now she vowed to destroy it.
Two hundred years ago, she has been given the formula for an elixir of immortality by a certain Dr Makaropulos. Young and foolish, she had prepared and drunk it. Now she cursed her greed for life. Friends, lovers and relatives had grown old and died, leaving her alone. With no death pursuing her, she lost all drive and ambition, and all of the projects she started seemed pointless. She had grown bored and weary, and now just longed for the grave.
Indeed, the quest for extinction had been the one goal which had given some shape and purpose to her life over the last half century. Now she finally had the antidote to the elixir. She has taken it a few days ago and could feel herself rapidly weakening. All that remained now was for her to make sure that no on else was condemned to life as she had been. The elixir itself had been long destroyed. Now, she took the piece of paper that specified the formula and tossed it into the fire. As she watched it burn, for the first time in decades, she smiled"
To quote an Julian Baggini;
"Perhaps we deceive ourselves when we say that the shortness of life is the problem. Since we can't alter the duration of our lives, any tragedy that results from it's brevity is not our fault. It is harder to admit that we are responsible for how we use the time allocated to us. Perhaps we should stop thinking 'if only I had more time' and think instead 'if only I make better use of the time I've got'"
You shouldn't live your life in fear of death and our own mortality. Instead, you need to embrace the volatile nature of life and make the most of it while we can. Enjoy life for whatever you think you should get out of it. Do what makes you happy, achieve your goals and truly appreciate the time you have here. When I'm older I wish to be able to look back on my life and think "All of those times I've had were magnificent, I truly love the life I have lived". And when I draw my final breaths I will smile, as now I will rest forever more with my final thoughts being pure and happy.
Sure, my life may be cut well short before then. But even still I do not regret the life I have had. I have made some brilliant friendships, achieved a lot of my goals and strive towards greater achievements daily. I've had some sadness and lost some close people, too. But those experienced have shaped the person I am and have enabled me to truly appreciate the significance of what we still have. I would die a happy man knowing I have stuck to my morals, lived my life the way I thought best and stayed true to who I was right until the end. To me, that's what truly matters.

i love life but i look forward to death. Buddha was right, existence is suffering. All the good and all the bad its a wonderful roller coaster ride but at the end of the day you just want to get off. I'd be disappointed if it came too soon but i hope that when i does come i'm at a point in my life where i feel happy just fading into nothing...

Even if that happened you wouldn't know it was 'you' again.
I'm sticking to the Big Freeze or Multiverse theories though...
As far as getting depressed when thinking of death..why? Be extremely grateful that you were ever even born. Then when contemplating death consider how things were before you were born, nothing. It will be (most likely) the same after death. What is there to worry about?

Why would in te world are you thinking about death? How old are you? Everyone here has atleast 50 years of their life left (If they live till 80). I just don't know why you would be wondering about death so early in your life ... You cannot have done everything ... So meh, idk .... Everyone dies, live with it.

fearing death is like fearing a needle with an anesthetic...
it'll come and you won't notice a thing. there's no point in fearing it.
Life is energy, energy doesn't waste. something happens to you. what exactly... nobody knows. All I can say is 'hope for reincarnation'.

Re: Death - Thought of it won't let me sleep
Death's only the end of your conscious awareness of the world. Sure your body decomposes, but that's just breaking down your molecules to be used again. Matter cannot be created nor destroyed; you simply get thrown back into the loop in a different form (this isn't reincarnation as if you'd come back as some other living thing). It's all basically recycling; you literally do exist forever, just you won't be conscious of it.

Re: Death - Thought of it won't let me sleep
I'm 21 and also started thinking about it more and its almost impossible to conceive yourself not existing, you have no idea what it would be like. You try hard to imagine what it is like to be before birth and after death but isnt possible and the harder you try to think about it the more distressed your mind will be. But every time that thought comes into myhead I just think of all the life ahead of me and the things I can acheieve, the things I have seen the childhood I have lived and the possibilities that awaits me. Life is fragile and you dont get a second chance so just live it to the fullest and never look back.
EDIT: Agree with the people above me, even though I am atheist the natural order of the universe will make use of our death in some way, things never get lost just recycled. For all we know, we've eaten our dead relatives through decomposition and them becoming compost for plants, trees and animals somehow.

Point of Religion = give hope that life continues.
If you're having trouble dealing with death, religion really is the only answer.
What you're speaking of is pretty much akin to reincarnation or alternate universe.
Short and concise for once.

Re: Death - Thought of it won't let me sleep
I don't really care about it...
When it comes, it comes, then you'll see what happens.
Yeah I'd be pretty sad if my mind just disappeared when I died.
Just remember this, if you think about it, you'll live every day thinking that you'll die some day, and your life will be negatively affected by it, so just don't think about it, live your life as well as you can, for as long as you can.

Re: Death - Thought of it won't let me sleep
I really dont see how something as 'I will die, someday, in the far far farrr future' can keep you awake at night
I guess to you it's the idea of death itself, but yeah, i can imagine worse concepts x__X and i try not to think off them while going to sleep
I sure would not want to die any time soon yet, luckely i dont plan to die anytime soon either.
I could imagine heavy worries or trauma's can keep you awake, but really, you shouldn't even worry about this.
Live life, Love life, make the best off it, you can worry about death once your 90 and alone (IF that situation would even ever occur at all).

My grandfather had a minor heart attack but at the time he thought he was going to die. He sat down in his chair and looked outside, thought about his life and felt pretty good. He was ready for it to be over and he enjoyed the ride.
I can only hope it's going to be like that for me too.

Re: Death - Thought of it won't let me sleep
i'm not exactly an atheist, so when I think of death, I think of the possibility of hell being real, which means I will go straight to there and get tortured for an eternity. That's worse than total blankness... I hope I will be able to wander around the world freely when I die, maybe time travelling too, without anyone seeing me. But I guess no one knows what really happens when you die.

You choose. I'm too busy having fun and enjoying my life to worry about death. Hey, whatever happens, THIS is fun.

I can honestly say I don't want to live when I get old (like 65+). By 60 you probably have grandchildren, are retired, and probably don't have much to do it gets very boring. My grandpa is like 87 and he can do all day is read the newspaper, watch some television, and for the most part go to sleep. I don't want afterlife either, I mean who wants to live on forever would get very boring after a while I think.
but for you I would say don't worry about dieing you still have a long time to go.

Can't wait to die myself, too lazy to do it myself though. I think of it as having a dreamless sleep after a long, tiring day.
