Need help with fan for GPU

Post by Ownage »

Hi so recenetly I am getting this display driver 'nvlddmkm.sys' has stopped responding and I can't play movies or games, so I found out the reason I am getting this is due to crazy high gpu temps.
I get 74-75C on idle and like 85+ when I play a game like sro on all low details.

So I decided to get a new fan to cool it down any suggestions? I was looking at this (http://www.zalman.com/ENG/product/Produ ... sp?idx=345) but I heard it can only lower my temps by like 10C and I don't know if that I will be enough.

btw forget a few details:

My budget is around $20, kind of low but 8500GT only costs like $40 now so I don't wanna spend $30+ on a fan when I can simply upgrade my gpu.
My graphic card is a Nvidia 8500 GT.

~Thanks

Temps depend a lot on the ambient air temp in your room. Being summer (here anyway) your room temps could be pretty high. You obviously can't cool the chip any lower than the room without active cooling.

That said, the good thing about an upgraded heatsink/fan is there will usually be less of a change between idle and load temps. So maybe it won;t lower your idle much, but your load temp will be a good bit lower.

I've been out of the component market for awhile, but back when I was into overclocking hardcore, zalman made good sinks.

EDIT: DOH! You want a fan, sorry. You're better off getting a new sink, but a fan won't hurt. It won't have as good an effect on your temp swings like a new sink would, but it can't hurt. What is your room temp at?

I saw this good $10 package from Vectag, or smoething that had a sink, and thermal paste, and a fan, now I imagine the fan will probably be crappy but do you think thats a good deal? Also it is summer here but the room temp is around 70 Farenheit, and I am not expecting it to go close to that, about 120F or like 50C would do it.

just upgrade your card the more modern cards tend to have a half decent sink nd fan with them by default if your not overclocking its usually good enough

if you have thermal grease try reapplying some. otherwise just save for a new card.

My new labtop is around 50 C idle and 70 during l4d2. Good or Bad? It feels so hot under my hand though...

I was thinking this but I have a budget of around $50, and for that I can get a 9500GT, don't know if it will solve the problem though that's why I am somewhat nervous, if it doesn't work this stupid error won't go away so I can't play games, and I gotta use this crappy default monitor resolution.

Edit:
Goseki, 50C on idle is good, anything below 60C is pretty good the problem isn't up until 70C+ on idle that it kinda turns into a problem.

Edit again:
So I can raise the budget to like $60, any suggestions on which graphic card I could get for that much? Any chance for a 9600GT :D

found this amazing deal:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product
think I should buy it?

also found a Evga GeForce 9600 GSO for only $34 after rebate, but I don't think I need $30 Evga prepaid card.

edit:
I heard a 9500GT isn't good for gaming so since I am already spending money on a new card why not a good one, so my question which do you think is better to get the above 9500GT or this Radeon 4670? Sorry I am very indecisive

http://www.amazon.com/Radeon-HD4670-DDR ... B002O0KVJO
Also I have been doing some research on this and I find a lot of people on pc forums from 08-09 saying the Radeon 4670 only costs $65, and after 1-2 years price shouldve gone down but yet I can't find one cheaper then $70, so if you could help with that too I would be very grateful

~Thanks

Quick bump, I have been seeing people talk about getting ATI 4670 for under $70 from posts like 1-2 years ago. But right now I can't find one below $65, so question now is if $65 is regular price or if I am not looking right.
