"you're all the same anyway" is what I was referring to. I am aware Asians have different ethnicities - Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Japanese, etc. But you're talking about the same thing. Lumping all of them together as "white" instead of German, Polish, Norwegian, etc. Or did I misinterpret your post?
"Chinese" is a certain ethnicity. "White" is not. We lump caucasians together as "white", not as a certain ethnicity like "british". Likewise, we should lump people as "asians", not a certain ethnicity like "chinese". The problem is that a lot of westerners just blow off all asians as "oh they are all chinese, same thing who cares". There is a lot more national pride among east asians than westerners. That is why when koreans, japanese, vietnamese, singaporeans get lumped together as "chinese", they find it offensive and rude.
So..if you want to know where an asian is from, it isn't such a great idea to go like "so what are you? chinese?". Even worse is assuming they are chinese when you first meet them. A better question would something general like "which country are you from?". Even better would be to check their last name - hard to mess up if you do that.

Well, I see your point, and know exactly what you mean. Luckily I don't look "Indian" at all.
There are a lot of Asians around here, but nah, I don't go around thinking they're all Chinese or Vietnamese or whatever.

I see no-one here lumping the nationalities mentioned as Chinese. I fail to see how your "Don't-call-me-Chinese" rant relates to anything here.
It's not just online. People OUTSIDE THE INTERWEBS, you know, IN REAL LIFE do it all the time.
I love Korean Music. Then when people I know see me watching a Kpop MV, they go like: Oh, you and your Chinese Music, just one of thousands of examples I could give.
Then to think those same people go hot over Jacob from Twilight and say stuff like: OMG I LOVE HIM, HE'S INDO RIGHT? BLABLABLA oh yeah, then they suddenly can tell what blood he has? damn them.

Let me rephrase what I said so you can understand. What does this thread have to do with it? Jstar just brought up a random pet peeve and ranted about it.
Concerning pet peeves, I really dislike how I'm not allowed to file a correction request to a certain bureau, because the document in question is a statement and not a conclusive verdict.
Besides, I don't hear people lumping Asians as Chinese here, even though there's hardly any people of Asian origin where I live.

i say that to my girlfriend. no big deal. oh wait maybe its cause she is chinese? or something like that. They are all the same.

I happened to rant about it because this is an ethnicity thread. And it isn't a pet peeve, most asians will find it offensive, even if you think they don't. How much they are offended depends on how much of a connection they have with their ancestral country. But really..I'm writing all this in your guys' favor. Non-asians make themselves look really dumb and ignorant when they say stuff like "chinese, japanese, same thing who cares", especially because it just makes you look like you live in the 19th century and don't know anything about foreign cultures. And its disrespectful because your basically saying certain countries don't matter/don't exist. Its the same thing as saying france is the same as the UK simply because people in both countries are white.

Re: Race
Keep in mind a lot of Americans haven't really lived among Asians, so the slight differences between a Korean or a Chinese wouldn't be obvious. I'm sure if they lived in a foreign country they'd pick it up.
I'm going to assume it's similar to an Asian or something living amongst a bunch of Norwegians or Germans or something, they couldn't pick out the subtle differences between a German or a Norwegian :p

Re: Race
Could you pick out where they're from if you would line up British, French, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, American, and or any other teenagers that are White from one another?
try it, it's fun. differences are very subtle, especially if they won't open their yap and start talking their own language. (or all try English, accents are so easy ;P )

because its funny how your post is so obvious. If theres hardly any asian people theres obvious hardly any reason for people to lump asians as chinese or talk about asians at all.

Can europeans really tell the difference between themselves? That would be interesting because I can usually tell what asian country someone is from looking at their face. Must be a cultural thing for sure.

Even though there's hardly any Asians living here, we get visitors and tourists from Asia. This week I met a group from South Korea who performed their traditional dances, and not too long ago, a group of Japanese, to mention some. I've never heard anyone generalizing them as Chinese.
Perhaps the reason is civilization rather than seclusion.

Re: Race
What about the dudes from northeast Europe or Russia?
They aren't English, and I don't see any other categorization for them under "caucasoid".
This grouping is very odd.

Well, Brits have something that distinguish them, and the Eastern euro's nose quite stands out (to me at least) Romanian, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Czech and others are easily spotted by their noses IMO.
