Strange problem on my new PC

Post by poehalcho »

Every now and then I randomly get a graphic bug. my screen turns into all kinds of blocky shapes and then it goes bsod and restarts. After the bsod I get a notice with some info. I'll screenshot it or copy the info next time I get it.

these are my specs:
MoBo: MSI 770-C45
GFXcard: Radeon HD5770
RAM: OCZ OCZ 4 GB DDR3-1333 Kit
CPU: AMD Athlon 630 x4 2.9GHz

I use Windows 7 Home premium 64bit, upgraded from a clean wiped windows XP.

someone mentioned it may be a Mobo problem...
Has anyone experienced such problems? Or heard of anything similar?

It's not even the bug itself that annoys me so very much, it's more the fear that something is not working properly. It's brand new :(, I want it to work well D;

I've had similar problems twice, both times my video card was dying.

Bad drivers, overheating, bad hardware in that order that I'd suspect it.

overheating doesn't seem like the problem =/
I hear drivers've been a bit problematic for windows 7, and considering I can't get my wireless to work for that same reason, I'm putting my guess (and hopes) on drivers as well.

Drivers is what I am putting SP on. I don't think it's a mobo problem. If it was, it would prolly not recognize your gpu to begin with.

Sounds like overheating problem to me. Check the fans, especially the video card fan. The fans that come with those cards tend to be toys...

Sounds like your card is artifact-ing.

a) You overclocked it too high
b) heat issue
c) bad drivers

it's probably..b or c

Simple way to check. Download something that can view your cards temperatures (speedfan is nice). If it's not the temps, download something to clear your video drivers (or some similar method) and then do a fresh install.

if it's as you say I can say 99% sure it's the drivers. it bsod's at completely random moments, yet I've had no instance yet as I play prototype on highest settings with LOTS of explosions. only a 1 fps skip :P every 3 hours or so. Though it clearly heats up quite a bit when I play it.

Turn off the 'reboot after systemcrash' function
In Windows XP:
Right click 'my computer' -> Properties -> Advanced -> (re)boot & repairsettings (don't know the exact english name of it) -> under the systemerrors section, turn off 'automatic reboot (after systemcrash).

I don't know the exact steps for W7, but it'll prolly be something like this too.

When the BSOD occurs, write down the error & google it.
If the error is like STOP 00000x0000x00000F....., don't bother googeling -> this is an error caused by 'bad' RAM. ( 'bad' RAM -> the computer tries to store info on the RAM on a defected adress)
Use memtest86+ to check for bad RAM (run it preferably 5 times) (0 errors -> 'good' RAM)
(x errors -> 'bad' RAM - since the comp is new, find out which RAM bar it is & ask for a replacement (these things should have a 2y warranty -> including a refund/new RAM bar if the RAM turns out 'bad')

99% sure it has to do with your graphic card or it's drivers.
If it's the driver, the BSOD should mention something about Catalyst (or w/e ATI driver's are named now)

Easiest way to check temps is through the ati overdrive in catalyst control center. Speedfan can be a bit off with the temps sometimes.

If its "artifacting" like azilius said, one reason for that can be that the card isnt inserted properly or got bad connection with the pci-e port. (i highly doubt it though, but it has happend to me)

And about the bsod's , my bet goes to the drivers aswell.

See if you can't get the video card replaced. I dunno about your card's manufacturer, but many of them have replacement policies that will give you a new card as long as the damage isn't physical.
