82nd Academy Awards
82nd Academy Awards
Honestly, among the ten, I've only seen half of them (Avatar, D9, Locker, Basterds, and both Ups). But if I were to choose from the ones I've seen, I'd go with either D9 or Locker.
I want D9 to win because it was unique, in a way that it tackled a common issue (discrimination) in a different light. It was also a low budget film that made a big surprise during the summer. And then to find out it was nominated for Best Picture was also a surprise. (Plus, I love sci-fi movies!)
Hurt Locker. Like what most critics say, it is an accurate portrayal of the daily events that occur in the Iraq war. It doesn't capture the entire events of the war, but it does deliver the atmosphere, the intensity, and the thrill. (Plus, it's directed by James Cameron's ex-wife. Ha! Take that Cameron!)
Elephant in the room: Avatar. It was great. It was stunning. It was beautiful. The storyline and the dialogues on the other hand, not so much. Personally, if I got 2 billion dollars from making a film, I wouldn't care that much if it didn't get Best Picture. For Avatar, I'd expect it to win all the techy awards though.

Re: 82nd Academy Awards
you ought to research what veterans actually said about hurt locker, which was that it was horribly inaccurate. Like 99% of all hollywood war movies.
I'm not a veteran but I think I get how ex-soldiers feel insulted when they see hollywood cashing in on bullshit movies where the directors can't get seem to get any historical accuracy right, especially since a lot of people consider war movies as entertainment when it was probably hell for the vets.
Ont: I want district 9 to win best picture but avatar is probably going to overshadow it because of cameron and all the amazing CGI hype. Plus it nuked the box office.

Re: 82nd Academy Awards
I did read the criticisms on Locker. I should reword my statement. It's not accurate but it's the closest so far, relative to other Iraq war movies.

Re: 82nd Academy Awards
Avatar was good, but I don't see what makes it as special as it's been made out to be.
I liked Inglorious Basterds, but I don't see how it could be the best movie of the year.
District 9 was good to watch, having seen the concept on youtube when it first came out. But the movie itself isn't movie of the year quality.
I rank movies by how much I enjoyed watching them; not how much money they cost to be made, the popularity of the film director, or the concept.
When it comes down to much how I enjoyed watching the movie, my top 5 doesn't match up.

I hated everything about avatar except the CGI. That was pretty much the only bright spot for me. It probably takes a 4th grader to figure out what happens next after each scene.

Out of those I enjoyed watching 'The Blind Side' the most. I have a soft spot for warner bros. happy ending movies.

I forgot what blind say was until you mentioned happy endings. I enjoyed watching that one more than avatar/district 9/inglorious basterds.

Re: 82nd Academy Awards
A Serious Man is the best movie on that list. The acting was solid, the story was intriguing, the flow was cohesive, the music was spot on, and the cinematography was perfect. If Avatar wins i will disregard the Oscars ever after. The movie looked nice, and was entertaining but was severely lacking when it came to the writing and the story. Inglorious was good. Personally while not my favorite Tarentino film i thought it was his best. Still i don't think it was movie of the year worthy. D9 was good too and while it started off original and intriguing it devolved into the cliche ending, big showdown with the military, lots of explosions, and while entertaining that cause alot of the depth to be removed from the film.
Not even sure why Up is on there, Mr. Fantastic Fox was a much better movie if they're just doing it to throw up an animated film. Not to say Up was bad, i enjoyed Up alot, just Mr. Fantastic Fox was a much better film imo...

did u guys hear about a planned sequel for avatar
The only logical story that I can think of is earth sending a massive army and just raping the whole planet and then getting their unobtanium.

From what I remember reading, it will be more about exploring pandora, not the cowboys and Indians theme.

Re: 82nd Academy Awards
lol seriously? They had enough of that native american style spiritual wonder magic in avatar. What more is there to learn? In any case, its probably going to be jake sully walking around the forest stroking his beard and being all philosphical. But I read that the commander guy (the guy at the end who gets stuck by arrows) might come back to terrorize the populace so probably not as boring.
/hatespeech
EDIT: and that still doesn't make sense because the only logical course of action is earth coming back for revenge. The whole idea of the sequel is going to be flawed from the beginning unless its a blue monkey genocide.

Avatar 2 will be about taking Neytiri back to Earth and see how it's like. It will be called Avatar II: Journey to a New World.

I have very low expectations for the sequels since most sequels are lame as shit and ruin a good movie (like transformers)

. While I did vote for hurt locker because I thought it was an interesting movie I'm pretty sure Avatar is going to sac most of the awards.. because of the reasons mentioned in this thread.F*$k Joymax.

you're kidding right?
avatar had the most cliche plot i have ever seen.
the arrows couldn't go through the ships until they really believed in themselves!
/sarcasm.
It sucked, the effects were cool, and they deserved that award, but other than that, i mean seriously, it's space pocahontas. you knew what would happen next, in EVERY single scene.

I didn't.. I watched pocahontas when I was like 4, so it was basically the first time watching it... but with cooler effects and all that shiny stuff.
