In solidarity: Mass March 4 (march for) education protests.

Post by Charatsandhu »

So all across America, though mostly in the state of California, there have been wide-spread protests over the outrageous fee hikes that have been passed for the higher education system. The education system in America is broken, and its worse than health care. Prisoners get six times more money spent on them than students do. The cost of education has gone up 103% in 8 years. All of the regents(board members) are CEOs or owners or partners of big corporations, and have been doing nothing to help the students. This may seem a little odd to some of you because many of the non-american SRF members have free education in other parts of the world.

I myself was personally at a protest in state capital of Sacramento, drove 80 miles to San Francisco for another protest, then back into Oakland for another rally. I ended up being semi-arrested, didn't get taken to jail but was handcuffed etc. Though i did get hit with rubber bullets and a nightstick :x I just got home 30 mins ago at midnight. we're definitely getting the message across though; its all over national news. just thought i'd share with the SRF community :D

It wasn't just in California, it was in over thirty states. I was originally going to drive down to LA, but didn't have enough money for gas to get down there

ehh, ill live. it was for a good cause :sohappy:

i don't like glenn beck. he suddenly decides that america is fcked up as soon as obama takes office, but didnt say anything when bush was in office for eight years. yea i agree with some of things he does his shows on, but i dont trust him anymore. he's a republican tool. as soon as republicans take washington again, he's going to think everything is right in the world, just like billo :nowant:

I'd have to agree. Education isn't like real estate. You can understand inflation in real estate, but not in a field that is so important, even at the elementary level.

On a slightly more devious note....
Spoiler!

lol, no offense

glad the people understand the importance of education in an information-based economy.

I think we need a massive overhaul of government at all levels, kick out the idiots and put in intelligent people.

Who else thinks "No child left behind" is gay?
I mean any non-honors/AP class is guaranteed to be consisted of 50% smart people who are bored to hell because the class is going too slowly and 50% retards who can't get a single thing and is slowing the class down.

tbh i think "no child left behind" is one of the things that Bush got right. obviously the standards could be much higher and i think all the states should have the same tests, but meh.

Yup yup, I'm from California and took part in my school's protest/gathering thing, I didn't get to go to sacramento though. California's education system and financial situation in general is so messed up and corrupt that it's just ridiculous.

Here's links that my school sent around, the first one specifically mentions my school, The California Maritime Academy;

Down with CEOs running our state! :nowant: :nowant: :nowant: :nowant: :nowant: :nowant: :nowant:

Yea, some people in my honors chem class are retards too, but its a lot less than CP classes. There are also probably some in AP too, but I'm sure it's not as much as CP or honors. I didn't take an AP class this year so I wouldn't know.

People should be put in classes they can take. When people are in CP and they get Ds and Fs why aren't they in standard? I get casual As.
When I'm in the same class as a guy who get's Fs and doesn't try at all I think there's a problem.

It is sad. I can never understand why we spend so little money on our educations system. It should be one of the most important things that we care about. Everything we do pertains to our education lvl nowadays.

Its because of idiots. I hate to say it but a lot of American students don't try, if college became free a lot of these people would go just for parties and shit. And most of these people are in the south, north actually has some ambitious people, I just don't understand why people care so little as to not even try in school, I mean it isn't all that hard. I know people who complain about being poor but they don't try in school and get B's, C's and D's, and these people have potential I have seen them try, they can do just as good as me, and I usually get A's and B's, but these people are lazy and will do nothing.

From what I've seen it looked to be a very counterproductive protest. Graffiti, destruction of property, basically acting irresponsible. The entire state of California is in a shit hole, not just your education. Boo hoo at your fee increases, everyone is having money issues.

The protests disrupted classes, damaged property, and wasted money (crowd control)... kind of hypocritical if you ask me.

Good cause, could have been a peaceful protest, but it wasn't. Too bad.
