possible video card upgrade?

Post by [SD]happynoobing »

yes! another computer component thread :D

I currently have an ATI 4850 1gb card, and im thinking about the following options (prices are from canada computers):

1) ATI4850 1gb crossfire - $132.99
2) ATI4890 1gb - $199.99
3) ATI5850 1gb - $336.99

In terms of performance from what i've read, 5850 (has dx11) > 4850 crossfire >= 4890

However, taking into account of the price, i'm leaning towards buying another 4850 card and crossfire it.

Any thoughts?

I think one DX 11 is better than two DX 10 in Crossfire....so 5670 then 2 5670's if you need more power. Cant you crossfire two unlike cards?

is dx11 really that good? dx10 was pretty much a letdown for me, sacrificing a fair bit of fps for marginal graphics improvement (for some games it's really hard to notice the difference).

yes u can crossfire 2 different cards, but from what i saw 4850+4870 is not much different from 4850+4850, and i dont know if u can crossfire a 48xx card with a 58xx card.

crossfire is linking 2 video cards together with ATI's crossfire bridge, basically increases the capability of the whole system.

I'd take the 5850 as the price/performance is the best IMO, and in a few years time you can plug in an extra 5850 for crossfire

4850 1gb is a great card, i don't see the point in upgrade.

Are you addicted to benchmarking? If no see below:

What components of your current system are causing your games to lag, because the 4850 shouldn't be a problem..? If none see below:

Why are you upgrading your gpu, what game do you play that the 4850 can't handle? Are you running it with a P4?? What res?

no im not addicted to benchmarking. i'm upgrading my current dual core from 3 yrs ago into an i5 (which i think is the major chokepoint right now). of course the 4850 runs current games well on medium settings, but im looking to see if there's a cost effective way to get on high settings. if not then i'll save my money and wait for another generation of ati cards or something.
