Streaming .avi files on the PS3

Post by heroo »

Hi guys, i recenty downloaded all DBZ episodes. All episodes are .avi files. The problem is that my PS3 streams some of the episodes, and others it won't stream and I get an error. It says the files aren't compatible. The weird thing is that they are all .avi files.

How can it be that some files are being played while others are incompatible?

try restarting. the PS3 is funny about avi files. Sometimes it will play them, and randomly it will say the file is incompatible.

is that the only solution?

cause all the episodes combined are something like 60GB, and I waited like two whole weeks before I was done downloading. so it's really a bummer if I can't stream it.

Maybe the files have a special codec. See if you can install extra codecs onto the PS3, and if that doesn't work you could always try to convert the files that won't play into a codec/format that's guaranteed to play.
Like you also need VLC on the PC to watch downloaded tv shows, I'm guessing PS3 also lacks a few codecs by default.

(I don't own a PS3 though, just thinking with you)

I picked up a media player the other day at an electronics store and I highly recommend it if for streaming media.

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/WDTV/

Supports a ton of formats too. Streaming HD content is awesome. 8)

Not all .avi are the same. There are different containers for different formats which require different codecs..it's pretty advanced and I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject..

tldr

most likely a codec issue.

They aren't encoded with the same way,if you want to read it on your PS3,you have no choice convert your .avi file into .mp4 files.

Not true. There are programs that let your ps3 play things like .mkv and others...

Converting is almost never the issue with all the codecs these days.

Try this website.
I've been using this program for a while and have had little to no problems. It really only has issues with hard subs in .mkv files (haven't yet found a program to properly translate them).
**This program may take up hard drive space, not sure because I personally have not noticed it.

@ dom

i know some files can be played. some of the episodes can be played, others can't. so i'll have to encode them I guess.

@orphen

i'm already using that program. the problem isn't that I can't stream the files, but the that my PS3 doesn't play them, yet they're avi. but there are different types of avi's.

Spoiler!

Spoiler!

The first one work on the ps3,the second don't work,
The reason it's because there aren't encoded in the same way.
PS3 isn't compatible with some AVI format just because the encoding isn't the same.
You say "Not true",what is not true?
You say also "Converting is almost never the issue with all the codecs these days" you're wrong, the PS3 actually almost all mp4 file but not all the avi file(Encoding make all).

When I said not true I was referring to him having to convert them. It wasn't true and he even said that he didn't have to. Thus I am right and you are wrong. Your last sentence doesn't have a VERB in it so I can't make a reply..because you don't make sense. Cool.
