any known problems with updating vista to windows 7?
I'm kinda looking at some new computers right now. Since windows 7 will be launching on the 22nd, the store offers a free upgrade from vista to 7.
My father mentioned that he's heard of computers that got upgraded to be working slow or something like that. So I'm asking whether this is true or not.
Aside from that could anyone tell me if these 2 are any good?
A pack that includes a 22' HD monitor, mouse, and keyboard for $545:

and...
A normal one with a lot better hardware for $600:
http://www.bcc.nl/productinfo/acer-aspire-m5201
both come with vista home premium, so that's why I ask.

Re: any known problems with updating vista to windows 7?
I recently got a new laptop with vista on it, ran as slow as hell. I wiped the HD and replaced vista with windows 7 RC. Works great. Most of the slowness you see with new computers is because they come bloated with useless software pre-packaged in by the manufacturer. Best bet is to just get rid of all that crap and download/buy the software you need yourself.

I got Win7 Ultimate from my university and installed it about three weeks ago.
There are no problems with upgrading. It may take awhile to upgrade, yes, but that all depends on how much data you have on your hard drive.
So there are no "problems", it just takes awhile. This is not an issue in itself, it's just the way it is.

Re: any known problems with updating vista to windows 7?
I had the worst problem when I upgraded >_>
-Vista on partition A.
-Split partition A to A & B and installed win7 on B.
-Later on I decided to reformat partition A and combine it with B as I didn't need it anymore.
-PC didn't start up due to lack of win7 boot files (evidently located on partition A which was now down the shitter)
-Tried to recreate boot files and got into a win7 temporary profile where no programs worked
-Spent 4 hours trying to work around a reformat..eventually gave up and lost everything.
Weird shit..if you're planning on keeping a partition of vista when you upgrade make sure you change your active partition to the new one before installing 7 -_-

Re: any known problems with updating vista to windows 7?
I don't think I'll be keeping anything from vista. the computer will be brand new and I'll install 7 on it straightaway...
So what am I supposed to do if I don't want to keep anything from vista?

I remember this happened to me as well when I tried dualbooting XP and Vista. It's a really crappy issue, lol. I managed to fix my Vista partition somehow (don't remember actually) which I could care less about since all my things were on XP. I found this program called EasyBCD to edit boot file on Vista and add entries for other OS partitions, so I added an entry for XP which allowed me to boot back into XP.

Re: any known problems with updating vista to windows 7?
first off: Is it problematic to upgrade a completely empty vista that you don't want to keep anything from to 7?
second: is this graphic card any good?
http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_ge ... 20_us.html
how long would I be able to do with that? Can I play prototype/AC/Spore on HQ with it?

yeah that I know, but I get the feeling that there are some useless parts in there. friends say that I don't need quadcore or that 8gb RAM is not really usefull. my nephew says that the video card (look above) is outdated...

Re: any known problems with updating vista to windows 7?
Upgrading shouldnt give you any problems the only things that might come up are the driver issues but I am pretty sure you can just run the hardware without dedicated win 7 drivers in vista compatability mode so that shouldnt be to big of an issue.

According to some people at toms it's equivalent to an 9500 GT. Means it's..not very good, not very bad. Think it's the same card the newer macs come with..

Your nephew is sorta right. I would buy a 2** series from Nvidia or a 46**/48** series from ATI to replace the one thats in that computer. About the quad core, I cant really tell from the website the specifics of the cpu, but if you are running a 64 bit system, both the larger cpu and amount of RAM will be superior.
BTW If you wait eleven days you could prolly get the same computer or a similar one with Win7 preinstalled. If I were you, I would wait awhile to see what else pops up after the Win7 launch on the 22nd.

lol yeah, I was gonna wait. no point in rushing it if the new stuff is coming out so soon
@theKnight
gotta admit, I'm a hater for the interface, but there's probably skins and shit so that can be fixed.

I'd have to agree, it doesnt deviate much from the Windows tradition. They could have at least ditched the desktop gadgets and gone with something like Samurize (but easier to understand).
Looking forward to what comes out after the launch. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and it looks pretty much like Vista but it just works, which is an ok tradeoff. I do like the Aero features and the new taskbar.
I think with any Windows OS, aesthetics is fixed with skins.
