Someone with Probability experience
Someone with Probability experience
I have a math question which i'm not really understanding because there's terminology I haven't learned yet.
Meghan (M), Jolene (J), and Tara (T) are the only entrants in a competition for which there is a first and second prize. Consider the experiment of selecting the two prize winners.
for the sample space I have {MJ, MT, JT, TJ, TM, JM}
now for the question I have to do its asking me to state as subsets of the sample space for different things.
ex. Meghan wins first prize...
May seem dumb to some but i'm not that bright.
EDIT: And if someone would like to help me understand better what Subsets are.

Re: Someone with Probability experience
Going to sleep, but if it's not answered in the morning, I'll answer it in sexy LaTeX.
The short of it: sample space is the set of all events (correct there), the subset is basically that whole set broken down. i.e. the whole set is {MJ, MT, JT, TJ, TM, JM} and the subset where Meghan wins is the first two elements of the set {MJ, MT}

Re: Someone with Probability experience
MJ = MICHAEL JACKSON
JM = JOYMAX
Lol, sorry i had to. Well, i'm too tired to think right now, but if i could... i would tried to help. Will help tomorrow if i can. :U

Let me see if my neurones are still awake...
so
what are subsets? lol
So u need to ask yourself to proove the theory of whos first and second? or something like that? :/
god, im stupid lol

Re: Someone with Probability experience
Bah, if you had waited two more days I could have helped. We're on combinatorial probability (easy) right now in my probability and statistics class.. We talked VERY briefly on sets and subsets today, but begin Set Theory in the next chapter on Friday..
Yes junior in college, yes behind on my math classes, kinda. Took calculus, skipped a year, now on stats, then calc II next semester lol.
I skimmed ahead in my book. Wouldn't a subset be a set with two outcomes that are basically the same elements. Ex. {MJ, JM}? If MJ is set A and JM is set B, A would be a subset of B, right? I may be reading it all wrong, but like I said we haven't covered this yet... they also go on to talk about Proper subsets.
Any who, good luck with your HW. /end useless post.
*google it, I bet there are some good resources out there. I'm too tired to look any up.

Lol... Im not even in post secondary yet... This is all Gr 12 shit.
Re: Someone with Probability experience
Yeah I took Calculus in grade 12, we didn't deal with probability.
I'm looking forward to chapter 6: Inference on a Binomial Proportion. Or Discrete random variables.

Re: Someone with Probability experience
Subset is kinda vague actually, but the example has Meghan winning first so I presumed the subsets it wanted was subsets of the entire sample space where M was first.

Some of my peers are still 16 because they have a late bday. Most are 17 and very few are 18.

Re: Someone with Probability experience
but.. isn't JM JT MT enough for it?
there's three possible outcomes, not 6, amirite? MJ, TJ and TM would be just too much...

Pff, Advanced Functions this semester, Calculus next.
Data Management is easy.

No there's 6 because there's 3 people, 2 prizes. 3 x 2 = 6.
