Hi I am also having this sort of problem with many programs, MSN messenger, Firefox, and Notepad to name a few. There really isn't any more explanation than that the using of SRO causes them all to crash or "encounter a problem and has to close".
Do so few people have this type of problem? It seems very odd to me because no other games I play cause any type of problem for me at all with running other programs.

Well this is an older post, but I can't seem to find anything relevant other then this.
Problem : Whenever I close SRO, sro_client.exe crashes (the wellknown "exception" error in Windows. Doesn't matter HOW I close it.
Yes, when I have SRO open and close TeamSpeak/Ventrillo/MSN/Skype they crash too. I haven't found the same behavior with other programs yet, eg. IE/FF/TB etc don't do it.
The annoyance is when SRO crashes, it takes a while for my comp to "catch" up (specs will follow), but oh well. Also, the stiff animation, which I solved thanks to a post here, is tricky. You have to do it and stay out of the OPtions dialogue. No issues there you say? Wrong; because of that crash ending my options/settings never get changed, which is just BLEGH when it comes to sound. THat's why it annoys me so in the first place.
It's like choosing between rigor-mortis fabric or hearing rain and nothing else (I don't have background enabled, I only have the middle sound option turned on, and it doesn't stay that way. It disabled the first 2 options, and enables the last one. While I want it 0 - 1 - 0)
Specs :
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ (XP-90 + Zalman fan) - it's not heat
MSI K8N Neo Platinum mobo
1GB RAM 3-3-3-8 Nanya techn. (2 * 512MB)
Xpert Vision X800GTO 256MB
120GB IDE as boot (and thus the drive used to install stuff on)
250GB SATA as storage
Antec SmartPower 2.0 500W PSU (should be enough)
