Is Java hard?/Calc question

Hey, so today was the first day of school and when I went to check out my classes it appears I was placed in an advanced computer science class.
When the teacher explained the things to us he said that we would basically be learning Java. He said it would go easy then near the end he would simply just give us a bunch of codes and we figure out the bugs/ know what their functions are just by reading the codes. Then at the end of year I have to take AP test on it

My question is , is Java hard for a person who's only experience is a bit of HTML.


Also, It turns out I need a "graphing" calculator, I bought a scientific one already but people are telling me that its the wrong one.

What is a cheap/good graphing calculator?

java is a great language to learn , not to hard , you shouldnt have a problem if you pay attention

Exactly. Though it may be tough for someone with nothing but HTML. If you have enough common sense to actually pay attention, you'll be fine. The whole idea of "look at this code and find the bugs" that all teachers say is really not as hard as some make it out to be. Once you know the basics of the language, finding bugs will come naturally.

when i learned Java i had no idea what was going on, in grade 11 at the end if the semester it finally came to me. what the heck you need a calculator for? we never used that and if we needed one we just used on the computer.

I think you mean the ones with the big screen that can make graphs. They're about 100€ here. Casio or TI is what yo ucan choose between i think.

Java is pretty easy and if you really need a graphing calc use a TI-83 or TI-89.

I heard tha java is not that difficult. And about the calculator thing. I'm usin this one and it's really good. Easy to use and has pretty much everything you need.

Its a casio, I don't know if it can graph though

If it was $20 bucks it won't be able to graph. Or I just got royally screwed buying mine. We use TI 84 plus in my school, I think it's a very good calculator with good interface and options. Looks a lot better than the casio graphing one. We get descriptions for both calculators and I think I got the easiest calculator.

Anyways, learning 36 elements isn't really that hard is it? Takes like what, 10 minutes or so?
Don't you guys get a foreign language and have to learn a couple of hundred words each time?

Nah I bought the Casiofx-300ES.

On the side it said that it can do just about any math even geometry.

But teacher told me no that I needed a graphing one.

But I don't know if this one does or not because the manual is like 8 X8 feet -.-


@Chemistry, he wants us to know the atomic mass as well =(

Java is a very easy OOP, perfect for beginners. For the most part, computer programming is easy, the languages are easy to learn, it's logic and breadth that's difficult.

Everyone has already answered your questions, but I wanted to add a little.

You don't HAVE to take the AP exam. Just because you're in an AP class doesn't mean the test is mandatory although that's what the class is suppose to prepare you for. At least that's how it is in Texas, pretty sure it's universal. You take the class then pay about $90 to take the test if you want. Do good and you may gain college credit at a university.

I took AP Calculus, AP Biology, and AP History. I only took the AP Biology test, scored a 4 (out of 5) and got 8hrs college credit for it. I wasn't fluent enough in history or calc to waste my $90 on the tests.

Also took dual-credit college courses in high school. Best to do it now if you can and save money in the long run. (usually)Took English and "Anatomy and Physiology".

I'm a CS major in college now, java isn't too difficult.

I didn't bother with computer classes in high school. If it's anything like my graphic design class was (or any of my classes for that matter), it will be a joke. As far as graphing calculators go, I've always used a TI-89 and never had a problem with it. It makes checking ginormous physics problems much easier. Stores constants and does unit conversions too, which is useful for chemistry and physics if you suck at dimensional analysis.

Variables make sense now and I learned how to use simple GUI and the scanner.

what did u read as your tuts?


id probably get a HP 50g if i were u. it's a lot more powerful than the TI89 and it can do RPN, in additional to integration/differentiaton/etc
