I would advise the shooting of someone breaking into your home too, they lose their rights when they decide they are gonna trespass and come into someones home intending to do harm one way or another and you can't really know if someones armed or not, nor should you wait to find out lol.

Playing Devil's Advocate here (not that I disagree with you Mr. Ganji). In most states, if someone breaks into your house, you can shoot to kill. You can just assume that they are coming into your home without being allowed, to do harm to you. While I personally wouldn't shoot someone, people have the right to do it (again, I stress in some states, I don't think all of them).
That said [/devilsadvocate]
You're freaking lucky. Someone breaks into your home WHILE you are there, knows where the people in the house are, steals ONLY a television, and leaves you be. I'd look for a new place to live, but damn...

I really have no clue, I heard about it secondhand from Qi/SoundFX/Blindfire, and someother crazy Canadian. From what it sounded like it was pretty corny (no pun intended).

I got lost after page 2 started...
When it happened, I was 6 days and 23 hours from moving out...
Now I'm wondering how organized they were. They had an obvious target, the roommate that was sleeping said she had her door unlocked too. Mine was obvious locked. They only grabbed tv, and dashed. And judging from the way our apartment looks, I'd say they were going for the same thing in each complex.
I believe it is legal to shoot to defend only if it is a trespasser. I remember some story where some hick shot a family cuz they stopped along the road to let their kids pissed. They only lost the case since the kids were not on their property but still along the side of the road. Hence they're in jail now. If the kids were though...

Its against the law. Like I said, unless their actions CLEARLY imply aggressive behavior on you or others, you're only digging yourself a deeper hole. And just because a stranger is in your house doesn't mean he/she is trying to kill you. They may only be there to steal, unarmed, with no intention to cross guns with the owner. Sure, fire away, see some blood, and when you go to court, almost all the blame will be on you, even though it was the dead guy who caused the trouble first. Im sure 1st or 2nd degree murder is what everyone wants on their record.
Dont shoot and ask questions later. Better advice would be to threaten the stranger with your weapon. Scream at him, shoot past his ear and make him leave. You've got him by the balls, and once his hands are up in the air, you can respond to the danger without breaking the law.

Re: Did I just have some good luck or some serious bad luck?
My first thought as I was reading this, was, it is one of your friends, moving your tv to play a joke or something. But if the rest of the apartments were broken into, by the sounds of it they got lucky to not get caught. I also think you are lucky that you or your gf didn't bump into them, never know if they're carrying some sort of weapon.

That's horrible advice. Shooting past his ear in a residential neighborhood would result in the shot GOING INTO someone's home; possibly injuring or killing someone else. Best advice would be to shoot them in the leg.
1. Not life threatening
2. It's a tag, if they do happen to get away still, now there's a guy that needs to go to the hospital because he was shot; don't think the police will catch that?
And just to add, since it appears you didn't read what I said before :/, no it is not illegal to shoot someone who's trespassing. In most NE states it is, in most every other state it is not. And while you would be questioned by police, you would not get charged (in most cases). That being said, I still wouldn't risk it for a stupid TV.

Another thing you'll have to think about, is how good a shot you are. You don't want to be a crap shot, try aiming pass the intruder and then accidentally shooting him in the head!!

Or them seeing you aiming at them and then instinctively moving their head to the side to try and avoid a headshot and then *Bam* HEADSHOT!

I think self defence is a good idea, but sometimes the victim is worse of with the law then the person is committing the crime. Especially in the UK, but our legal system isn't that great anyway.

And you don't find tresspassing into ones home aggressive? Because people break into homes all the time and give hugs and stuff right lol. It may not mean hes trying to kill you, but you should assume the worse and not wait to find out. I really don't see a court/jury convicting someone who was scared because someone broke into their home and killed them, but maybe it's happened, still that's ridiculous, its not far along the lines of breaking into someones home and then sueing them because you tripped and got hurt or something >.>. Anyway I certainly wouldn't wait to find out just what his intentions are, especially if my gf was there. It's not like you have to kill him anyway, shoot him in the arm or leg, if you'd rather, it's clearly self defense.
I'm not sayin you should always shoot though, you see somoene, tell em not to move, if they move, well shoot then.

If you have a gun with you, you probably know how to shot, therefore you don't need to kill the person, I obviously wouldn't shoot a guy in the chest if he entered my house, but I would shoot him if he tried something.
Oh and, only stealing? lol.
Re: Did I just have some good luck or some serious bad luck?
Ganji, state laws differ. In some (could be most, CBA to look), merely trespassing unlawfully can make you an open target.
Also, if your shot is going to head through the walls of your house, across the street/yard, and into your neighbor's body, you need to rethink that decision to protect yourself with a rifle in .50 BMG. Shotguns, handguns, and smaller caliber rifles like (no joke) AR15s are ideal for home defense, as they pose no serious threat to anyone outside due to low penetrating power. Larger caliber rifles, lets say at about .30 cal and up, is where you start taking chances. For what it's worth though, there isn't much you can own legally that will make it through a few walls and cover any distance while still being lethal.
Weak gun laws? My money would be on ignorance and irresponsibility.
