Hmmm I didn't read about the hotel thing but, Im pretty confident if he couldn't make it (was gonna die) they'd pull him out, and in that case hed need a place to stay; he also needs a place to stay between expeditions too. There are episodes where hes got camera all through the night by campfire etc, and the other guy is just as guilty.
The other guy was in scottland I think, fell in a giant hole underneath some brush, and a mysterious arm reached in and pulled him out. In the same episode, he slept in this tiny cave in a "sheeping bag" made of sheep skin, in pouring rain too... so wheres his camera guy stay? A tent with a meal of his own lolol

Who cares if hes fake, at least hes not afraid to jump into death pits, swim in arctic water, and eat crazy shit right?
