It seems often when there is alot of people 2 or 3 will start talking about something the rest of the people have nothing in common with or have no interest in thus it gets boring for the rest, they just leave or alt tab. It's happened to me a few times.

At least in SRF chat, it's all text based. If there are 8 people, and 2-3 are talking about something the other 5 are not interested in, the others can start their own conversation. I've been in plenty of IRC/AIM/AOL/Yahoo/etc chat rooms where 3-8 different conversations were going on at the same time. It's a lot easier to do that in a text chat than in vent where everyone's using voice.

I usually just avoid going into union vent altogether.

Absolutely not. I'm saying text chat regarding the subject can be ignored for the most part if you simply ignore anyone you're not directly talking to.
