SRF Chat and you

I used it when I once played Silkroad, which is like 3 years ago. I only used it when servers were down or something, was pretty pointless. I like 'forumming' a lot better than chatting anyways.

Shoutbox sounds great but if implemented, is there a way to have one in each of the most active sections? With the amount of people browsing this forums, it would be hell, like mixing GD with OTL.

Well, in the event it is abused as such, we can ban people from it. Or at least thats what I understood, not only forum side, but applet side as well.

I did notice nobody has moderator power on it. This is an issue.

The button to go to the chat is too small. I hardly see it and then after a while u forget there is a chat. atleast i do.

Try putting it on the side navigation? Cause thats were everybody goes to move page from page, nobody ever looks all the way up, the only thing I look for is a number beside my Inbox lol

Replace the chat with a section where posts aren't counted so we can have conversations that way.

A shoutbox doesn't sound like a bad idea at all, but I can see it getting flooded if it is on the main SRF Home page and the forums are getting busy. Maybe an individual shoutbox for each subforum? Or just one for the "Forum Home" page, and none for the other subforums. I know IGL does it, and another forum I visit.

I was thinking the same thing. I remember trying to load the SRF Chat applet and the status bar had a message about trying to connect to an IRC server. I assume then you could use any IRC chat client, connect to that server, and browse to the appropriate channel?

The issues with shoutbox is

1. It needs modded. Heavily.

2. Its recursive. its more SQL queries than making a post or using chat. Each shoutbox line an SQL query. Much like the chat we had PREVIOUSLY which bogged down the server.

3. Most sites with a shoutbox are often much smaller making all of the above a lot more manageable

In the meantime, I contacted Phyrex1an about getting moderator priveleges and the spoofed accounts in chat.

To resolve the issue of people using fake accounts, Phyrex1an has enforced validating your account.

Unfortunately the script (?) that does this isnt quite correct and nobody can talk.
