And why would some hackers hack a normal internet user? I think they aim for little more meaningfull www users.
actually false you can get a virus by just visiting a web site. but that is where google chrome and firefox come in (IE dosent count because its microsofts and comes with windows and gets the most viruses and such)

You can get a virus by just visiting a website, if you don't have protection. Every time you visit a site, it goes in your cache/temporary internet files, on your computer. Your browser isn't a secure bubble, it uses your harddrive to store data from the internet all the time. There's probably that chick up in the lefthand corner of this forum on your computer if you were to look hard enough, and the forum layout itself. Saving such things on your computer helps your browser load the page faster for the next time you visit.
It's less common than downloading an infected file, but it still does happen.

Well, partly true I suppose.
Some internet scum just want to mess your shit up, doesn't matter who you are.
Some want to steal any information they can, whether it be bank information.. kewl pics.. or to even go as far as to blackmail you in some way.
Here's the real tricksters though; Some want your computer to be as healthy as can be - So they can launch their attacks on whomever they choose using your own computer. When someone does this, your computer is called a "Slave" and if they were to do something highly illegal, you'd probably end up with the police at your door confiscating your computer for evidence.. and maybe even yourself. (Til they figure out it wasn't actually you, and that you're just an innocent victim) I know someone that this happened to.. it was on the news a while ago, well some tv news. Not CNN or anything of course. He didn't come back to that forum afterwards lol.. his mom probably didn't let him - not even bullshitting here.
anyway enough of that.. back to antivirus talk.
@Lady_Shadows hmm.. are you sure about that? I know that FF and chrome are much more secure than IE, but I still think it's possible to get infected even while browsing with them. Might be wrong about that one, though. Would have to look into it.

well its safer because now and then chrome gives me the "this site may be harmful to your computer". also about the stuff saving on your hard drive that is where ccleaner comes in and such. clearing out the files regularly will prevent anything to sit there and wait to strike (wont really help for the instant attackers).

Sure you can, they're called drive by downloads.
I use Comodo Internet Security.

Re: Which antivirus program do you use?
zShared, my 9+ years of having a virus-free PC without any antivirus program contradicts most of what you've been saying.
I only recently got the Comodo firewall, and it rarely (if ever) detects suspicious activity.
You just have to be smart about what you're doing.

Okay.. and if a legit site got hacked, and you went to it and it ran a script without your permission--
it is possible, and it can happen.. sure it's very, very rare, but there's still that chance.
I think the saying "Better safe than sorry" applies, can you please give me one good reason why not having an antivirus is a good idea?
Antivirus
pros:
safety
security
peace of mind (lol)
idiotproof if someone else were to use your pc
cons:
..Might give you a false positive popup
Uses system resources (Very minimal)
Few minute install (is that a con?)

BitDefender 2009, PC World rated it #1 last year, it does pretty well, but the "dashboard" is a little confusing to navigate.

Re: Which antivirus program do you use?
To the people who think they don't need an anti-virus: good luck. You'll never know when you might catch a virus or a rogue anti-virus. I'm not sure if you're aware but you CAN get a virus by simply visiting websites - doesn't have to be an illegal website or a porn website. Hell, I've been visiting surfthechannel for a while and I never get anything on this computer but I tried going there once on our work computer with an outdated anti-virus and guess what, we got a rogue AV (I did remove it right away though). And for the record, as good as firefox is, it can't protect you from everything; why do I know this? because I was using FF the time my screen suddenly froze for 15 seconds and the rogue AV was installed.

Re: Which antivirus program do you use?
Yes you can get viruses if you mindlessly browse the internet and click every link you see.

Unless you have an anti-virus.

Who knows, even the 'safest' site like Google can have some virus issues.
