[H] Building a computer
Re: [H] Building a computer
In my opinion since you are getting an ATI card you should be able to easily find an AMD compatible motherboard ( i do realize this is redoing most of your computer but... this is what i was planning on.)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB Hard Drive - 7200, 8MB, Serial ATA-300, OEM 44.99
Lite-On DVD-ROM - 18x DVD-ROM, 48x CD-ROM, ATAPI/E-IDE 19.99
Coolmax / CX-550B / Black / 550-Watt / ATX / 120mm Fan / SATA-Ready / 20/24-Pin / Power Supply - 39.96
Patriot Dual Channel 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (2 x 1024MB) - 9.99$
Thermaltake WingRS 100 ATX Piano-Black Mid-Tower Case with Front USB and Audio ports 44.99$
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad Core Processor HDZ940XCGIBOX - 3.00GHz, 6MB Cache, 1800MHz (3600 MT/s) FSB, Deneb, Quad-Core, Retail, Socket AM2+, Unlocked Multiplier, Processor with Fan - $199
Sapphire Radeon HD 4670 - 1024MB DDR3, PCI Express 2.0, CrossFireX Ready, Dual DVI, HDTV, HDMI Support, Video Card - 69.99$
MSI DKA790GX Motherboard - AMD790FX, Socket AM2+, ATX, Audio, PCI Express 2.0, HDMI, DVI, VGA, Gigabit LAN, S/PDIF, USB 2.0, eSATA, RAID - 139.99$
they are in Canadian dollars so if you are in America its better.
Website i got the prices from : http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... aignID=833
well that is the sale going on for the new "Dragon" platform by AMD.
it totals for 569.89 Canadian dollars
so it would be about 522.075 American Dollars.
EDIT : Just noticed that you are now using a 9800gtx and not an ATI card which makes my post slightly obsolete.

Re: [H] Building a computer
The only problem I see is that you actually want an Intel...
Re: [H] Building a computer
he's in a budget is he not? Its why i chose an AMD processor , IMO its better but lets not make this an Intel Vs AMD thread.

Re: [H] Building a computer
Why have a 100$ Power Supply ready for Intel Core i7 if your running Core 2 Duo?

AMD can mix with Nvidia and Intel can mix with AMD, doesn't matter.
I think what he has listed is about the best you can do for his budget. Its a rock solid system that will do exactly what he wants, and then some.
The rig you posted only has 2GB of ram, a lot less hard drive space, and a cheap psu I wouldn't risk a PIII system on. Not bashing, just saying it doesn't compare to what he has listed. If it fits your budget and does what you want that's awesome.
Don't worry, it will run all the programs he wants (listed in first post) on high settings.
ExSoldier wrote:Why have a 100$ Power Supply ready for Intel Core i7 if your running Core 2 Duo?
Because the PSU is one of the most important pieces to a solid stable pc build. If it fails it could take all your expensive hardware with it. Cheap psu's don't deliver very clean power, it fluctuates a lot, and over all can cause problems, especially with stability.
He's not paying for the "i7 compatibility", he's paying for the quality of it.
EDIT: Grammar and spelling =/

Yeah i know it was more fitting for as i can barely use up 80gb of hard drive so i went to the least amount (save a couple dollars). I wasn't too sure about the psu either but now tat you clear it up when i purchase ille probably change it. And the ram, i was planning my operating system to be Windows XP x64 so i woulden't require as much ram but off course if i did i could upgrade.
Anyways Thanks

Re: [H] Building a computer
Hey guys, another question:
I think i lost my XP install disc from way before, so I might have to use a friend's install disc. If that is the case, can I still use my old computer's product key (it's a dell) to activate Windows XP?
Or should I just go out and buy an OEM version of Vista - $99.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6832116488
EDIT:
My understanding of the key on the COA is this.
All install discs are the same for that type, ie. install discs for XP Home are all the same, install discs for XP Professional are all the same.
As long as I use the same type of install disc that the Dell product key is coupled with, which was XP Home, then I should be able to use it. However, since I built a new computer, the hardware won't match up to that product key, so I'll have to call Microsoft and come up with a bullshit story like "my mobo on the dell blew up so I had to buy a new one, please activate kthx".
Right?

Re: [H] Building a computer
If he has the exact same copy of xp that you had it should work.
If you do need to call them.. DON'T say it is a new mobo.. they won't validate it. I made that mistake once. Just say you needed to reinstall it. You don't have to tell them its a totally different pc. As long as you say "yes" to "is this installed on one pc".
Windows 7 RC is a free download from Microsoft until the trial ends in July (I think July). So if something goes wrong you have that option.
If his copy of XP is 32-bit you won't make full use of the 4GB of ram you bought.

Re: [H] Building a computer
I know, which is why I'm hesitant to even go back to XP.
Can I install Windows 7 RC directly from boot menu just like any OS? Or is it an upgrade.
I might just use Windows 7 RC until the trial ends, by which time my Vista should have come.
EDIT: Nevermind. I just read over it. Gonna go out and buy a clean DVD to burn the ISO.

Re: [H] Building a computer
as a videocard i'd get the hd4770, it is faster than an hd4670 and a hd4830. It is close to the hd4850.
It is a 40nm card so it produces less heat, can overclock more and uses less energy.

Found my Windows Vista Ultimate install disc. It's OEM though, but a quick phone call should resolve that.

Re: [H] Building a computer
Damnit I wish I could build a new computer every 3-6 months. Shame they go along for 2 years (when built/taken care of properly).
I built this one a few months ago, q6660, 8800 GT SLI, 4GB ram, vista 64.
I wanna get parts and build one every day!
Gz on your new machine
