It's his money, so who are you to tell him what to do with it?

Money gets wasted by people way worse, he actually buys something he likes.

How about 10.000 dollars for a rare stamp? Or buying a 50.000 dollar painting? Same thing.

Well I kinda understand the price. The making of process of "real" katana is really complicated.

True. I never saw it myself, but I got told what they would do for preperations alone. It's actually quite stunning you know. There's a reason why Japanese swords are so expensive. You not only pay for the sword itself, but also for the attention and the time the sword master placed in creating it. These are things which are so often and undeservedly overlooked. There's a reason why there's a price tag on works of art like that. The reason why it's so expensive isn't that hard to fathom if you use you're imagination a little bit. It's very expensive to get one made from scratch though, but then again, if you have no money worries, you don't have to lose sleep over losing some money. You can just write it off as some expensive materialistic asset. Assuming you see genuine japanese steel as something materialistic, where as I prefer to see it as something beautiful which one should treasure and keep safe from neglect or any incurred damages. You don't use something as beautiful as a katana just so you can prance around in in the woods feeling like Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai. You treasure it, keep watch over it and then leave it alone on the mantle. Swords shoulds always be allowed to shine to their fullest. Away from neglect or mistreatment. After all, Samurai once believed the sword they wielded were equal to value of their own soul. It was certainly not considered or treated to be anything less.

Sidenote: I would much rather see him buy this sword then alcohol or drugs. =]

I've watched some 50min long document about making of katanas. You can watch it at youtube in several parts. And katanas aren't called the ultimate swords for nothing. "Real" katanas are sharpest, lightest, strongest and imo most beautiful swords in world.

Ive seen some program once that showed the proccess of making a real japanese katana, its quit a special piece of work >.<

Though, the swords had to be really thin, really sharp yet strong enough to cut though basicly anything and not break... They also simply look beautifull

EDIT: and they have to be PERFECTLY balanced >.< ! that's hard as hell aswell ^^

Cosplay and Roleplaying.

Or as decoration. It's cool to have a katana in your room.

They aren't katanas. The thing is, these "swords" you buy online are all fake, madeinchina POS katana look alikes and arent genuine. I seriously recommend you spend your money on something else.

Paintings and stamps could in a way also be an investment. This sword can not. It's just a regular production sword which won't increase in value over time. I don't think money is wasted on an expensive painting, think it's more wasted on a stupid production sword.

What might seem like a waste of money to you can make a worthy purchase for somebody else.

Few people buy paintings as an investment, most people just buy them because they plain like it unless you look at musea or hardcore collectors.

Maybe topic starter is simply being advised against doing something stupid.

You can't compare buying some cheapass fake "sword" online to purchasing real works of art hundreds of years old. Nor can you justify the purchase of the "swords", or anything, simply because you "like it". It doesnt matter whether you make 200k a year or 10 bucks an hour - everyone needs to follow principles of saving, of wise money spending decisions (*cough* wall street *cough*)...

I'm really liking this one. But that's mostly because I don't really like curved swords that much. But that's just personal taste. You should try to get a Swordstand with it to. Unless you want to have it lying on it's side all the time? They are not that expensive imho, if you got $700 to spare for 1 sword, a nice swordstand shouldn't be such an hassle either. =]

The Most expensive one there is the red one for $50. These are display swords only. The cheapest functional one I found that's made from real damascuss steel and folded 2000 Times is this one for $129
Spoiler!

And this one is $189 which i like
Spoiler!

A lot of people buy things they don't need. But they do it cause they can and they are interested the stuff.
XemnasXD wrote:where do you get $700 of disposable income...

Well I make like $500 bucks a month off of an Americore stipend and I bought a bunch of other sweet stuff. My parents owe me like $700+ also. I also live with my parents for the time being and I have no bills. So I can go to school easier.
Ash wrote:look guys who still think it's cool to spend 700$ on a "sword" ; you need to find a job . Once you start earning money you'll understand the value of it .
I actually and well aware of the value of money. That being the reason why I've had a hard time to spend some on myself.

Mr.Ganji wrote:

No duh they aren't genuine.. What would I need An authentic sword for? I'm not a freaking Ninja :P
And btw, the second is a Katana, the first one is not. (straight blade) And the 3rd one is purely fantasy.
And they have functional Swords as well made out of Damascus steel and folded up to 2000 Times. I personally like the one for $189 posted above in this post.

wow...no bills, a stipend, and somehow your parents owe you money what with the roof they put over your head and all...perhaps im being too judgmental but something with that picture doesn't seem right to me...

OnT: since you're going to waste $700 on a novelty item that lacks functionality but is aesthetically pleasing i'd suggest going with the second one, its decorative without being absurd nor does it take itself too seriously....

i thought katanas got the different layers/sorts look by
different cooldown and harden times for the steel by adding
a certain coating on the steel when cooling it to make the
cutting part harder than the back part so that it can bend
slightly to not make the impact break the whole thing.

They don't add a coating, they put different steel inside it while forging and folding so the inside is softer than the outside.

Actually I bought the one that costs $37 lol.
And I don't want a functional one cause I don't wanna be stuck with upkeep.

And yea no billz cause i live with my parents and they can pay everything fine, they owe me money cause our power bill was 3 grand one month cause of stupid ass charges that didn't get explained. They just don't really need my help.
