gfx card trouble

so i bought a pc a bit over a month ago, and i have
a 4870x2 in it. the other day i connected my tv screen
to my pc to get a dual screen and that all went fine.
then the next day i get some odd crash and my pc bsod's
and reboots. tv gets signal while booting, but as soon
as windows is fully booted the signal is gone.

the problem isn't so much that the tv can't get a signal
now, but that i had about 4 more bsod's before i found
out my gfx card was overheating. i checked it and it went
up to 90+ degrees idle. i managed to turn on the manual
fan settings, so it's not overheating now, but thats shit
because i have to either put it on high which makes a
shitload of noise (it does that above 38% or so), or put
it on low and keep switching it as it heats up.

anyone know if this can only be a hardware problem, or
could it also have something to do with my software?
because i'd rather just run some kind of fix than sending
it to some company not being able to use my pc for like
2 weeks. and yes i downloaded the newest drivers.

Make sure you have enough cooling inside your computer besides your graphics card.
Check airflow throughout the case, recommended would be if you have at least 1 casefan blowing in, and at least 1 casefan blowing out. Also check if you have any other stuff like a soundcard or TV-card right next to it which could be blocking the airflow of the card

stock fan speed is 20%, and that's just too low for the card.
use 40% speed, you won't even notice the sound after a while

My 285 gtx stock is 40% and I never notice the sound. I've never reached 90 though..even playing crysis for 3~ hours. Make sure you have good airflow and your PC exhaust isn't right up against the wall.

i know i can put the fan on 40%. the problem is that the
thing used to turn the fan up by itself, and now i have
to do it manually. the card worked great and never really
got over 60 degrees. now it goes up to 90 degrees without
the fan responding to that.

airflow in my case is great as well, and i can fit like
3 of these computers in it, so it's also big enough. i've
got 3 12cm fans on it, the cpu has an extra fan and even
my ram is cooled by fans.

so i was wondering (again)

is there a possibility of this problem being a software
problem, or will i have to send my card back to the store
i bought it from? because the automatic fan did work before,
so i'm not going to manually turn it up to 40% and cope
with the sound because above 40% its like a tornado in
there.

Try to reinstall software first, then consult ATI tech help. Card should still be under warranty as well.
