I would think so too. I can see how they might think it's offensive, and annoy them how something so important is now be used simply to advertise tourism.

Taking something, turning into something to help gain money or something else.

Though, you must remember. We're one of the most laid back countries (Except when competing against New Zealand or Great Britain at sport). Our humor is often perceived as racism, though that isn't the intention. Our humor too is all too often perceived as offensive, as in this case where once again; that was never the intention.

Yea, but thats only gonna work if it's directed at you guys, but this is directed at others to get tourism, like you said.

Personally I don't find it offensive.

Yeah. I understand, though we think other people understand our humor when they don't. We often get weird looks if we say something to an American or Brit. It's weird like that though.

Snoopy, a couple months ago did the Australian government start paying you to advertise for them on SRF or something? What's with the influx of AUSTRALIA FTW? Not that I'm hating or anything, I've actually always wanted to visit Australia, just wondering.

Anywho, not offensive at all. Only offensive thing in this topic so far was the idiotic comment about Americans having nothing better to do except whine.

It comes naturally to me. If you have a great homeland, why not brag about it :)

A lot of the time I don't even realise I do it. We've been through the "America fcuk yeah!" period, now it's Australia's time to shine.

that kind of made me lol

OT: Yes, I was kind of offended. Some things in life are simply too special and honorable to mess around with. In a sense, its like burning the American flag and erroneously using the bill of rights as to claim freedom of expression. Manipulating the picture of such a moment in history for commercial use is wrong.

I didn't think this thread was bragging. Neither do I see a problem with bragging about Australia. Best country on earth.

Let's make this a bragfest shall we.

Ok ok... I was being stupid. I am extremely proud to be Australian, and if I weren't Australian, the only other nationality I'd like to be would be American.

With that said, I think this shouldn't be seen as offensive, though I do somewhat agree with Ganji. Things that don't intend on offending, often do. This is yet, another one of those. I think Tourism Australia is stupid with how they sell Australia and there is far better ways. One being, don't show pictures of the Gold Coast and pretend it's Sydney :banghead:

Here's a list of T.Aus blunders:

Oct 08. T.Aus announces $50 million 2 minute "Go walkabout ad".

Aug 07. Tourism minister launches "Immerse yourself in Australia's world heritage" because "Where the bloody hell are ya?" ad was banned in the UK.

May 07. T.Aus removes Indy and Gold Coast Magic Millions off the events calender and adds Brisbane Cockroach Races.

Feb 06. $180 million spent on advertising "Where the bloody hell are ya?" ad, only to be banned in the UK and Japanese people didn't even understand it -.-

May 04. $360 million dollar Australia - In a different light campaign. Only to fail yet again.

@Sacchin. Lol get on msn

To me whether or not something is acceptable is the intentions behind it. If the context and intentions behind the add are nothing to be offended over, which in this case i believe to be true, than theres no big deal. Hell i could see a piece of grass and claim that it is "offensive to grass" and be justified. Thats where intentions and context come into it.

Im Australian. Im straight and far from being gay and im the opposite of a racist, im an equaliist. Each to their own and give everyone an equal right and an equal share of niceness. If an individual abuses that kindness than i will strip it from them, but not their race or social group collectively, rather them as a person.

You just proved yourself to be stereotypical and racist and in result a complete and utter hypocrite. Congratulations.

Hah. Considering this has little to do with homosexuality, and is hardly racist, I fail to understand where you're going with this. You proved nothing other than you too are racist, hypocritical and probably homosexual as far as I'm concerned.

Tbh, I do kind of find it somewhat offensive.
Mainly because I grew up reading books about Iwo Jima *sp?* and that picture of the marines raising up the flag has always been rather "symbolic" for me in a way.

But, I'm not mad or anything. I just don't think it's that great of an add.

What does it symbolise for you though.
No matter how much you think you love somebody, you'll step back when the pool of their blood edges up too close.

As Americans or Japanese, do you find this offensive? I ask this, because in the age of political correctness. A time where, everything has to suit all religions/cultures/races etc, Is this offensive?

In my opinion, I don't think it should be offensive. It wasn't intended to offend and it isn't like the flag is replaced with a Nazi Flag, or a Japanese flag. It is a umbrella.

The reason it was made was to attract the Americans and Japanese to Australia and the Gold Coast. Australia's tourist hub. (Where I live)

Apparently
Instead of American soldiers raising the Stars and Stripes atop Mount Suribachi, Tourism Australia has a family erecting a beach umbrella on the sand.

In doing so it disrespects the sacrifice of thousands of US soldiers who helped protect Australia, defeat the Japanese and bring a swifter end to the war.

Somewhat overboard. Regardless the people who lose sleep over this clearly neglected the college experience, get a f.... life

Well it once again comes down to intentions and context. I think Tourism Australia had only good intentions, intentions not to offend. I think there could have been better ways to advertise a country.

It did however, have a caption "Win the Work/Life battle"
