Yea, but thats only gonna work if it's directed at you guys, but this is directed at others to get tourism, like you said.
Personally I don't find it offensive.

Oct 08. T.Aus announces $50 million 2 minute "Go walkabout ad".
Aug 07. Tourism minister launches "Immerse yourself in Australia's world heritage" because "Where the bloody hell are ya?" ad was banned in the UK.
May 07. T.Aus removes Indy and Gold Coast Magic Millions off the events calender and adds Brisbane Cockroach Races.
Feb 06. $180 million spent on advertising "Where the bloody hell are ya?" ad, only to be banned in the UK and Japanese people didn't even understand it -.-
May 04. $360 million dollar Australia - In a different light campaign. Only to fail yet again.

If the context and intentions behind the add are nothing to be offended over, which in this case i believe to be true, than theres no big deal. Hell i could see a piece of grass and claim that it is "offensive to grass" and be justified. Thats where intentions and context come into it.

Mainly because I grew up reading books about Iwo Jima *sp?* and that picture of the marines raising up the flag has always been rather "symbolic" for me in a way.
But, I'm not mad or anything. I just don't think it's that great of an add.

As Americans or Japanese, do you find this offensive? I ask this, because in the age of political correctness. A time where, everything has to suit all religions/cultures/races etc, Is this offensive?
In my opinion, I don't think it should be offensive. It wasn't intended to offend and it isn't like the flag is replaced with a Nazi Flag, or a Japanese flag. It is a umbrella.
The reason it was made was to attract the Americans and Japanese to Australia and the Gold Coast. Australia's tourist hub. (Where I live)
ApparentlyInstead of American soldiers raising the Stars and Stripes atop Mount Suribachi, Tourism Australia has a family erecting a beach umbrella on the sand.
In doing so it disrespects the sacrifice of thousands of US soldiers who helped protect Australia, defeat the Japanese and bring a swifter end to the war.
