Re: thinking of joining the army
I'll tell you what my dad told me.
If you're joining the military for the sole purpose of "there's no jobs here", then you need to step back and really really think about it, because that's a terrible reason to join.
Sorry, but that's the harsh truth.

i would say consider all branches just not the army,
imo navy would be better to avoid iraq

Oh lord. If you're going to not join a branch just to avoid getting deployed, then I would suggest not even joining at all. Every branch has the possibility to be deployed. Navy is overseas now. Obviously Army/Marines are front line, but you could be shipped out no matter what. For the Air Force what they usually do is send you over to do job specific tasks, but they can also assign you to escort a convoy or something.

Re: thinking of joining the army
Talk to your local recruiter. Ask any and all questions you can. He'll throw a bunch of numbers in your face that sound real nice, but don't be sold merely by those. Make sure he answers any questions you have. I would still suggest checking out the other branches, but if you're dead set on the Army/Marines, then more power to you. I couldn't do it. Air Force <3. Soon, soon.

I agree lol. My 20 year odl brother Joined when he was 17. Dropped out of school for it just to earn some money. Now he actually likes it a little bit though.
Re: thinking of joining the army
I thought about it too for the same reason, but then I found out there's this place called college, and banks will loan you money to go if you're lucky. The military is only good if you make a career out of it. All I ever hear from my dad or my uncle is that they would've been far better off if they had stayed in longer. And they both spent years in Europe and stuff back when the wall was still up.

Well, I wouldn't make a decision that fast, you can always wait some months for some jobs, and if you still want to join the army then, go for it

You probably won't like my suggestions, and there are a few, but it's a big decision, read them all
Read a book or two about being in the military before you make any decisions. There are PLENTY out there. There are a lot of things you may experience being in the military that you should consider before you make any decisions.
Have you taken the military entrance exam at your school yet? It used to be called the ASVAB or something. If they still do that, take it. A higher score on tests like that will get you far, and you'll know what kind of skills you might have that are necessary.
For the love of all that is holy, bring someone else with you when you talk to the recruiter. They throw a TON of info and numbers at you. Their job is to recruit you, and most of them are very good at it. You might feel compelled to sign that same day because of what they say to you, and that's a bad idea. You don't want to make rash decisions. Preferably, you have read up on joining the military BEFORE you talk to the recruiter so you know what types of questions to ask.

Re: thinking of joining the army
Just be careful of the recruiter, their there to make quota's of getting people to join. So they can almost say what ever your little heart desires.
I would highly suggest any other branch besides the Army and Marines.
There are jobs with in the branches like MP,Medic, ect. if your guaranteed one of those, that means nothing. They can change your job and make you do what they want. Once you sign the papers and take an oath, the government owns you for the period of your enlistment.
I don't hate the military or anything, I just hear about some of the stories, and some of the things that go on in it. I have a high school ROTC and hear the Col. and Chief. tell us many stories and how it works a bit.
Good Luck on what ever your choice is.

Called the GI Bill. When you talk to the Army recruiter, he'll hand you a list of jobs. Well...he did for me. Any job with a star (*) next to it meant that I would be front lines pulling a trigger.

Most Air Force fields won't ever pull a trigger. Unless they're deployed and in the situation I described above.

You know you could always join the Coast Guard.
If current deaths went by those percentages, we would have a lot more deaths on our hands.

Re: thinking of joining the army
The list of jobs was a real reality check for some reason. I can't explain why, but when he said anything with a star (*) next to it meant you'd be pulling a trigger, it was like a slap in the face.
Moral of the story of this thread: Do your homework before you even consider signing that paper and joining. Another thing: When you talk to the recruiter, DO NOT sign any paper without a parent or someone else there.

If you want to join the army. Do it because YOU want to, because YOU want to serve your country. Don't do it because there's a lack of jobs.

USAF in a few weeks. Almost done conditioning for it. Been getting in shape. I figured out the secret to knowing when you're ready for basic here. When you can eat something and work out enough that you don't shit, but you use all the energy from the food, then you're good. That's how basic is. They work you so hard that you don't shit for like two weeks straight because you're using all the food you ingest.

No sir. I wear glasses so I can't be a pilot. I want to get into Air Traffic Control. If/when I get out of the Air Force, I can use ATC training to get a civilian job. Then since I had the special training for the job, the salary is huge. Hopefully that's how it goes.
Will you be allowed to play hopscotch in the mine fields?
No! Dammit. You missed my weed thread. Way to disappoint.
