Computer basically shat itself.
As title says. Before I shut down my computer, all the programs lost their icons. Then my computer wouldn't shut normally, so I held in the button. I'm not smart when it comes to computers.
Ok, so I went to log into my passworded account (admin i think). Had some error message, so I pushed the restart button. Now, my computer is as it was before, except a lot of things refreshed, and it seems to be running slow.
My desktop has less icons but all my same programs are there. Just everything refreshed, and I had an icon in the tray on the bottom right saying "Welcome to Windows XP".
Anyone have any ideas?

after you failed to reboot, and after you pressed
the reset button when it was still starting up,
did you reboot it the normal way again? or did you
try running it in safe mode? the safe mode should
have popped up when you decided to not shut down
the pc the proper way right?

If you have spare time, reinstall XP (enter in safe mod* and backup programs and things you need)
if it still get's borked, it means your HDD has some damaged sectors
* to enter in safe mode press F8 when PC is starting

When I read the title, I thought that you woke up to a computer covered in shit and thought the computer had shat itself.
I'm glad I didn't have to break the news for you.
P.S. I think your harddrive's dying, I'd save what files I could and get a new computer.

System recovery. If you don't have a checkpoint you should slap yourself for not enabling it.
