Your plans for/of college?

Post by emperor3000 »

So High School is about 1 year and couple of months away to be ending. (For me, and maybe some people in this forum)

I was wondering how people here, who already got into, or have plans about their college planning.

This is so that I can see what are the obstacles people have been through and how I can comfortably join a college of my choice.

Question 1
1 ) How did you get into the college you got into now? Or, how will you plan into getting into that college you prefer?
Question 2
2 ) How are you going to pay for that college? And what about the cost of dorms, books, materials, for college?
Question 3
3 ) How did you know that the college you are going(or went) was the right college for you?
Question 4
4 ) What are the major(s) in which you are planning to study on? Or had you studied on?
Question 5
5 ) Are you taking a job part/full time? in order to pay for college?
Question 6
6 ) Did you join anything or went to any kind of programs, clubs, college festivals, internships, etc. that helped you go college picking?
Question 7
7 ) You planning on going to a college close or far away from home? If far/close, then how far/close?
Question 8
8 ) How many years are you planning on going to college?
Question 9
9 ) What kind of college is it that you are going to or have been to?
(i.e. Universities, Private college, community college)

And I would thank you for having the time to read and maybe contribute to these series of questions I have.

Edit: Removal of spoilers and now able to see question 6

Spoiler!

I'll take a part time job waiting tables or something to pay my way through.

Spoiler!

I'll be attending a college that's 3 hours away from my house. So I can still make it up on a few weekends if I want too, but it's far enough away so I can be on me own.

Spoiler!

www.collegeboard.com it's not completely accurate, but it will give you a start. Call the school you're thinking of going to and ask about the fee's for dormitory, living expenses, etc.

Re: Your plans for/of college?

I'm going to University of California Irvine this fall.

1 ) How did you get into the college you got into now? Or, how will you plan into getting into that college you prefer?

I applied for it online.

2 ) How are you going to pay for that college? And what about the cost of dorms, books, materials, for college?

Parents. Also got a couple of loans from the FAFSA financial aid application which I'll probably end up using.

3 ) How did you know that the college you are going(or went) was the right college for you?

I guess I won't really know until the year has actually started but I have toured the campus a couple of times and it does have a nice atmosphere about it and the students there seem friendly and helpful. Note of advice: Always go visit the college before accepting and choose a college based on whether or not you would feel comfortable there cause you're gonna be living there for 2-5 years. It helps if you visualize yourself there.

4 ) What are the major(s) in which you are planning to study on? Or had you studied on?

I'm planning on majoring in Information and Computer Science. If you have picked a major and you decided that you want to switch it, you will usually be able to. Note: I've heard that it's easier to switch from an Engineering major to another one as opposed to doing it vice versa.

5 ) Are you taking a job part/full time? in order to pay for college?[/spoiler
No. Personally I don't recommend you do so your first year because you want to first check out how heavy classes are and you want to get accustomed to college life, which is a dramatic change from what you're used to. Possibly take a job during your second year at the earliest. Also many colleges offer jobs in campus.

6 ) Did you join anything or went to any kind of programs, clubs, college festivals, internships, etc. that helped you go college picking?
During the summer of the end of my high school junior year, my family and I went on road trips to visit various colleges. I encourage you to do the same. Other times, colleges might come to your city and have an event where you get to learn more about it but its usually better if you're able to see the college.

7 ) You planning on going to a college close or far away from home? If far/close, then how far/close?

Well, I live in the Bay Area so Irvine (in Southern California) is about 7 hours away by car (depends on traffic) and about 2-3 hours by plane. As a matter of fact I just got back from there about an hour ago from my second visit.(left at 4pm got here at 10pm)

8 ) How many years are you planning on going to college?

Right now I'm going for a Masters Degree which takes between 4-5 years. Might consider going for pHD later on which is an additional 3-4 years.

9 ) What kind of college is it that you are going to or have been to? (i.e. Universities, Private college, community college)
I only visited Universities in California since I didn't want to go to college out of state.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions just ask away.

1) How did you get into the college you got into now? Or, how will you plan into getting into that college you prefer?

Going to community college first to take all the "essential" courses some colleges say you gotta take, then I'm going to transfer to a 4-year university.

2) How are you going to pay for that college? And what about the cost of dorms, books, materials, for college?

That's a question I wished I had an answer.

3) How did you know that the college you are going(or went) was the right college for you?

Campus visit/tour.

4) What are the major(s) in which you are planning to study on? Or had you studied on?

No idea really. It's either going to be in foreign languages (linguistics, etc.), or in biology to possibly medicine down the road.

8) How many years are you planning on going to college?

As many as it takes.

Putting the questions in spoilers is really annoying.

1.) Holland has a different education system. Opposed to a general education level throughout high school, high school is already divided into several levels. If you're on the academic level this means the only thing you need is your diploma, afterwards all universities open their doors for you.
I'm planning on just getting this diploma and then applying to my university = almost certainly auto accept on their part.
Spoiler!

2.) Parents + government.
I will get a sum of money sufficient to provide in my needs from my parents, as well as around 200 euro's from the government per month. It's some sort of a stimulation loan. If you get your degree, you don't have to pay it back.

3.) Haven't decided.
4.) Haven't decided yet. Perhaps history.
5.) No.
6.) Not necessary
7.) Far doesn't exist in Holland.
8.) I don't know. Perhaps I want to pursue a scientific career at some point which means I'll go for my PhD as well.
9.) All universities in Holland are 'community colleges'. It's paid for a part by the government and part by yourself.
Spoiler!

I'll be heading out to Texas A&M this fall.

1 ) How did you get into the college you got into now? Or, how will you plan into getting into that college you prefer?

Applied online.

2 ) How are you going to pay for that college? And what about the cost of dorms, books, materials, for college?

My tip to you man, and take it how you wish. Try your very best to not take out loans. I know it may be hard but try and cut some money out of your budget now, and apply to as many scholarships as you can. You can do workstudy during college to make money on campus. There are ways to pay for college that don't involve handicapping yourself financially for the rest of your life.

3 ) How did you know that the college you are going(or went) was the right college for you?

I went and visited a couple of times. And it is also very renown in the field in which I am wishing to pursue, so all in all it was a good package.

4 ) What are the major(s) in which you are planning to study on? Or had you studied on?

Electrical and Computer Engineering.

5 ) Are you taking a job part/full time? in order to pay for college?

I honestly do not recommend getting a job on your first year because that is the year of your 'transition' and you want to make it as smooth as possible without worrying about responsibilities that can be put off till later.

6 ) Did you join anything or went to any kind of programs, clubs, college festivals, internships, etc. that helped you go college picking?

Nope

7 ) You planning on going to a college close or far away from home? If far/close, then how far/close?

It is not too far, close enough that I can come home every few weeks if I need to.

8 ) How many years are you planning on going to college?

As long as it takes to get the degree.

9 ) What kind of college is it that you are going to or have been to? (i.e. Universities, Private college, community college)

Public?

the most important thing is keeping track of deadlines. Sending an application early is such an advantage for you.

keep your grades up and for the love of god don't blow off your senior year.

2 ) How are you going to pay for that college? And what about the cost of dorms, books, materials, for college?

If your good at math or science, offer tutoring to middle schoolers and grade school kids. You can charge about $15 or $20. Waaayyyy better than mcdonalds or the mall

And try your best not to take loans, they are really going to drag you down when you graduate. State colleges are usually affordable and private schools offer a lot of aid because they are rich, so you shouldn't worry so much about money

Sorry about that, I thought the spoilers could of helped the way people look at the questions.

OT: Now I currently see people are trying to Major in Computer Science and/or Technology, kudos to you all (I am majoring in those too  )

I hope more people can contribute so I can see also how people will pay off their loans if they do get them.

they usually give you 6th months after you leave school to start paying them off. which sucks, you will leave school already in debt up to 200thousand dollars... way to start life on your own eh?

I take you're also a junior in high school? 'cause so am I =D Like the other people above me, I suggest you DO visit the college you have in mind. And of course, check out their website to find out requirements for applying.

Question 1
1 ) How did you get into the college you got into now? Or, how will you plan into getting into that college you prefer?

Well, being in the top 10% of my class will grant me admittance into the university (assuming I do everything else), but their school of engineering may look at test scores and such (idk the full details).

Question 2
2 ) How are you going to pay for that college? And what about the cost of dorms, books, materials, for college?

My parents pay for anything that deals with education.

Question 3
3 ) How did you know that the college you are going(or went) was the right college for you?

Well, it's pretty close to my home... (about 20 minutes away), and it's a nice school. I visited the campus during their open house this year.

Question 4
4 ) What are the major(s) in which you are planning to study on? Or had you studied on?

Computer Engineering

Question 5
5 ) Are you taking a job part/full time? in order to pay for college?

Nope

Question 6
6 ) Did you join anything or went to any kind of programs, clubs, college festivals, internships, etc. that helped you go college picking?

If you count the college's open house

Question 7
7 ) You planning on going to a college close or far away from home? If far/close, then how far/close?

Close. Verrrrrry close.

Question 8
8 ) How many years are you planning on going to college?

I'm thinking of getting a Master's degree.

Question 9
9 ) What kind of college is it that you are going to or have been to?
(i.e. Universities, Private college, community college)

UT at Austin

Applications are this summer, time to get started on those two essays. >.>

Question 1
1 ) How did you get into the college you got into now? Or, how will you plan into getting into that college you prefer?
well I did my undergrad in a really good school, and I basically got in because I worked my butt off the last 2 years of high school
Question 2
2 ) How are you going to pay for that college? And what about the cost of dorms, books, materials, for college?
well my parents paid for my undergrad, but now I'm in my masters I have to pay myself, luckly I got research funding and TAing now, so my education is currently free, but seeing the economy's bad shape, I might need to pay actually next year when funding is cut short :(
Question 3
3 ) How did you know that the college you are going(or went) was the right college for you?
To be honest you don't, some people end up hating their college experience, but most of the time you should be able to find your comfort zone within the college, its a place with diversity after all
Question 4
4 ) What are the major(s) in which you are planning to study on? Or had you studied on?
I did my undergrad on Environmental Biology, now doing masters of biology
Question 5
5 ) Are you taking a job part/full time? in order to pay for college?
Basically I didn't work when I was doing my undergrad, but summer job helps get the living expenses in, refer to question 2
Question 6
6 ) Did you join anything or went to any kind of programs, clubs, college festivals, internships, etc. that helped you go college picking?
well any orientation or campus tour helps
Question 7
7 ) You planning on going to a college close or far away from home? If far/close, then how far/close?
I did it far away from home because I want some freedom, seriously my mom still ask if I have homework to do when I'm home once in a while =.=, but living at home will cut down your cost a lot
Question 8
8 ) How many years are you planning on going to college?
I think I'm done after masters, so 4 years undergrad +2 years masters = 6 years
Question 9
9 ) What kind of college is it that you are going to or have been to?
(i.e. Universities, Private college, community college)
Universities only, but I heard currently all the people who went to college are taking all the jobs because they have a better hands on experience
